  18. Plot Points
  19. * Sheridan's forces have liberated Proxima 3. In the process,
  20. several additional Earth Alliance cruisers defected to his side.
  21. Some are remaining to guard Proxima 3 against retaliation by
  22. President Clark.
  23. * During the Earth-Minbari War, G'Kar personally supervised the sale
  24. of Narn weapons to Earth.
  25. * Londo and G'Kar have agreed to throw the support of their
  26. respective governments behind Sheridan. The nonaligned worlds have
  27. apparently dissolved their mutual defense pacts with Earth and are
  28. staying out of the conflict, aside from loaning ships to help
  29. defend Babylon 5 itself.
  30. * Garibaldi has left the station for Mars, and never intends to
  31. return. He plans to try to help free Earth, but not in concert
  32. with Sheridan, whose methods Garibaldi opposes.
  33. Unanswered Questions
  34. * What exactly will come of the declaration of support by Centauri
  35. Prime and Narn? Will they provide military support to Sheridan?
  36. Did he know the declaration was coming?
  37. * Does Londo's declaration mean that he has voided the nonagression
  38. treaty between Centauri Prime and Earth ([20]"The Fall of Night?")
  39. Does the implantation of a Keeper on at least one Centauri
  40. official ([21]"Epiphanies") spell trouble for Centauri support of
  41. Sheridan's cause?
  42. * What was Vir writing when he fell asleep?
  43. * What business did Garibaldi have in Centauri space?
  44. * What does Garibaldi plan to do to fight for Earth?
  45. * How does Sheridan hope to use the frozen telepaths?
  46. Analysis
  47. * Sheridan told Commander Levitt the League wasn't getting involved
  48. because he wanted this to be a clean fight, presumably meaning no
  49. alien involvement. But in fact, aliens are already involved; the
  50. crew of the White Star fleet is largely Minbari, and the ships
  51. themselves are a Minbari/Vorlon concoction.
  52. Earth forces being attacked by Minbari-made vessels with Minbari
  53. crews would seem perfect propaganda fodder for Clark, further
  54. "evidence" that Sheridan has gone over to the Minbari side as
  55. suggested in [22]"The Illusion of Truth."
  56. Of course, it could be argued that many Minbari are part human
  57. anyway ([23]"Atonement") and thus aren't completely out of place
  58. in a human civil war, but that argument would likely do little to
  59. dampen the effect of Clark's propaganda, should he choose to
  60. concoct any.
  61. * Patriotism and its effects played a key thematic role in this
  62. episode. Sheridan's patriotism (as described when he spoke to the
  63. other captains about the ideals of the Alliance) drove him to
  64. attack his own people. Garibaldi's patriotism, if his conversation
  65. with Vir is to be believed, is strong as well, but Sheridan's
  66. methods are abhorrent to him. Londo's patriotism led him to
  67. forsake his friends, and now he finds himself alone. G'Kar's
  68. patriotism lost him his eye.
  69. Perhaps even Clark believes he's acting in Earth's best interest,
  70. though that puts him on a collision course with Sheridan.
  71. * Did Garibaldi tell Edgars about Sheridan's imminent campaign? If
  72. so, Edgars doesn't appear to have relayed the information to Earth
  73. Force, since the commanders at Proxima 3 were unaware Sheridan was
  74. on the move. On the other hand, Garibaldi didn't know the
  75. particulars of the first phase of the campaign.
  76. * Garibaldi apparently didn't visit G'Kar to say goodbye (or at
  77. least, no such visit was shown.) Why not, especially given what
  78. G'Kar went through while searching for him?
  79. * G'Kar is apparently still working on the book he started while in
  80. prison ([24]"Messages from Earth.")
  81. * When Londo asked about G'Kar's eye, G'Kar responded, "It sees."
  82. His eye is therefore probably not, at present, the "eye that does
  83. not see" from Lady Morella's prophecy ([25]"Point of No Return.")
  84. Was his natural eye in fact the one referred to by the prophecy?
  85. Since it needs to be recharged nightly to continue seeing
  86. ([26]"Atonement") and since it's not in evidence 17 years in the
  87. future, when G'Kar and Londo kill each other ([27]"War Without
  88. End, Part Two") the artificial eye may yet turn out to be the one
  89. Morella was referring to.
  90. * Londo offered a toast to the humans, who he regards as a bridge
  91. between the Centauri and Narn. This echoes Delenn's statements
  92. ([28]"And Now For a Word," [29]"Lines of Communication") that
  93. humanity's greatest strength is the ability to form communities of
  94. diverse people.
  95. * The drink Londo referred to while talking to G'Kar was in [30]"The
  96. Coming of Shadows," bought by G'Kar after he learned the Centauri
  97. Emperor had come to make peace with the Narn.
  98. Shortly thereafter, Londo did have some inkling that he was losing
  99. his friends thanks to his activities; he offered Garibaldi a drink
  100. in [31]"Acts of Sacrifice," acknowledging that the two were still
  101. "friends, if only for a little while."
  102. * Londo's rationale for the joint declaration was nearly identical
  103. to Sheridan's argument for allowing the White Star fleet to patrol
  104. Narn and Centauri space ([32]"Conflicts of Interest.") However,
  105. since Sheridan apparently decided not to publicize the fact that
  106. both the Narn and Centauri had agreed to the patrols (assuming the
  107. Narn agreed -- it's only been explicitly stated that the Centauri
  108. did) this joint declaration is the first official act of unity
  109. that's been shown.
  110. * Vir's nightmare presumably related to the assassination of
  111. Cartagia ([33]"The Long Night.") It's odd that he cried out, "I
  112. didn't do it," when in fact he did kill Cartagia, perhaps an
  113. indication that part of him still doesn't believe what he did.
  114. On the other hand, it's possible he was dreaming of something
  115. else, perhaps one of the precognitive dreams Centauri have. In
  116. that case, one candidate that'd fit his exclamation would be his
  117. discovery of the dead bodies of Londo and G'Kar ([34]"War Without
  118. End, Part Two.")
  119. One other Centauri has been shown awakening from a nightmare
  120. recently: the Regent in [35]"Epiphanies," who awoke to discover he
  121. had a Keeper attached to his neck.
  122. * Earth appears to have improved its scanning technology; White Star
  123. ships were hit more than once during the battle. Previously, Earth
  124. weapon systems haven't been able to lock onto Minbari ships (e.g.
  125. [36]"Points of Departure.") Presumably the White Stars, which
  126. incorporate much more advanced Vorlon technology as well, are even
  127. harder to get a fix on. Perhaps the Shadows supplied Earth with
  128. some technical tips.
  129. It's possible manual targeting was used (novel [37]"The Shadow
  130. Within") and the Earth ships simply got in a few lucky shots, but
  131. that runs counter to Sheridan's message to the other captains that
  132. he wouldn't consider them hostile if their weapons didn't lock on.
  133. That message wouldn't make sense if they weren't capable of
  134. locking on anyway. On the other hand, since Sheridan wanted to
  135. test the hostility of the Earth ships, he may have ordered the
  136. White Stars to turn off their countermeasures. In [38]"Points of
  137. Departure" Minbari ships were able to make themselves trackable by
  138. the station's scanners as desired.
  139. Either way, only one White Star was seen to have been destroyed,
  140. and then only because it smashed into a cruiser seconds after
  141. being hit. Possibly the White Stars are advanced enough that a
  142. momentary loss of control is the only real impact from a single
  143. hit by Earth weapons.
  144. * While Marcus was gathering information on the hostility of the
  145. Earth cruisers, his contact on Proxima 3 was under attack by
  146. ground forces. What happened to the ground forces after the space
  147. battle? Sheridan appeared to consider the planet liberated once
  148. the commander of the Heracles capitulated; did she have authority
  149. over all Earth forces in the region, or are there still holdouts
  150. on the surface?
  151. * Sheridan promised to liberate Proxima, then take the battle to
  152. Mars and finally to Earth. What about the colony on Orion 7, which
  153. seceded from the Earth Alliance at the same time Proxima 3 did?
  154. ([39]"Severed Dreams") Perhaps it has already fallen, or maybe
  155. it's not under as much duress as Proxima was, so Sheridan felt the
  156. best way to liberate it was to take back Earth. Or perhaps it's a
  157. small colony and Clark didn't deem it worth the effort to take
  158. back.
  159. * In [40]"War Without End, Part One" the White Star's Vorlon
  160. technology adapted its defenses to shrug off blasts from Shadow
  161. fighters after it was hit. Will the surviving White Stars from the
  162. battle at Proxima 3 now be more resistant to Earth's weapons, and
  163. thus even more potent weapons?
  164. * Commander Levitt knew that the League worlds had sided with
  165. Sheridan. How did she know, if Babylon 5 is officially cut off
  166. from Earth? The most likely answer is that she'd been watching the
  167. Voice of the Resistance broadcasts, which indicates that they are
  168. indeed reaching the colonies.
  169. Notes
  170. * The Alexander ([41]"Severed Dreams") has survived and is
  171. apparently now patrolling Proxima 3 to guard against retaliation
  172. by Clark's forces.
  173. * The Vesta's logo (visible on the bridge) is a stylized flame in a
  174. brazier. Vesta is the Roman goddess of the hearth. The Heracles'
  175. logo appears to incorporate arrows in the "H" at the bottom,
  176. probably a reference to Heracles' poison arrows from Greek
  177. mythology.
  178. * The ship that withdrew from the battle was the Juno. In Roman
  179. mythology, Juno was the goddess of light and birth. In Greek
  180. mythology she was called Hera.
  181. * The names of two of the ships that surrendered had symbolic
  182. relation to Sheridan's campaign. The Furies were goddesses who
  183. punished crimes against one's kin. Nemesis was the goddess who
  184. punished hubris -- putting oneself above the gods.
  185. * The Pollux was named after Greek mythology as well. Castor and
  186. Pollux, the two main stars of the constellation Gemini, were
  187. brothers. When Pollux was killed, Castor was so despondent that
  188. Zeus agreed to turn them both into stars so they could always be
  189. together.
  190. * Possible continuity glitch: Just before Garibaldi's arrival, Vir
  191. drops his pen while he's asleep. When he stands up, he's holding
  192. the pen again. Of course, he might have picked it up upon
  193. awakening.
  194. * Effects glitch: The Earth Alliance logos on the Pollux and the
  195. Furies are backwards. The "E" can be seen to point to the left
  196. rather than the right.
  197. jms speaks
  198. * _Why don't we ever see Clark?_
  199. I wanted to keep Clark more a force than a person...and Vir has
  200. just been off doing his usual Vir stuff...he's back this coming
  201. week.
  202. * Proxima 3 is in the Proxima Centauri system, next door to Proxima
  203. 2, but no one goes there because the tourist season is way too
  204. short.
  205. * "It seems to me that the White Stars (particularly in the numbers
  206. I perceived in this Ep) should have been able to deal with the
  207. Earth ships like lamb to a slaughter."
  208. Yeah, if all you want is to slaughter fellow humans and officers;
  209. if you want to try to minimize the body count of your fellow
  210. officers, who you want to eventually side with you, it's more
  211. difficult, you have to keep the kid gloves on...which endangers
  212. you in the long run.
  213. * "were these White Stars tired or something? I would've expected
  214. that a couple of them could just go slice-slice, sever the
  215. rotating sections on the EA ships and have 'em for breakfast."
  216. Sure, if all you're interested in is slaughtering the
  217. opposition...they were designed for "destroy"...when you have to
  218. pull your punches to avoid just going in and killing EVERYthing in
  219. sight...which will only work *against* you in the long run, it
  220. becomes more difficult.
  221. * _There were a lot of ethical decisions on all sides, something you
  222. don't usually see in military SF. Were you in the military?_
  223. No, I wasn't in the military, just having missed the Vietnam
  224. draft. The points you mention are all the ones I wanted to get
  225. into with that episode, and the ones a lot of folks have
  226. overlooked in suggesting that it should have been an episode about
  227. slicing-and-dicing the enemy (the enemy in this case being our own
  228. species). The show, at root, is about ethics, among other things,
  229. and the ethical choices will continue to get more difficult the
  230. deeper you go. There is a very fine line that Sheridan's walking
  231. in all this.
  232. * It's certainly an issue I care about quite a lot, and the delicate
  233. balance between orders and conscience, between what you think you
  234. should be doing vs. what you feel you *must* do, is the heart of
  235. 99% of all drama.
  236. * "G'Kar seems to know that it's Mollari at his door -- why else
  237. would he wait so long to call, "Enter?" But how did he know -- was
  238. it an official request by Londo?"
  239. If you recall, when Garibaldi visited Vir, Vir mentioned that
  240. Londo was arranging a meeting with G'Kar, so it was definitely set
  241. up in advance.
  242. * The Londo/G'Kar stuff was nifty...and yes, he's struggling toward
  243. redemption as best he can, making a real effort, which is
  244. important, because if he's going to end up with a Keeper on him
  245. eventually, as we've seen, best to feel for him, which you can't
  246. if he's a bad guy.
  247. Set 'em up, knock 'em down....
  248. * If G'Kar came around too easily or quickly, it would ring false;
  249. it had to go through some time and reflection. But even though one
  250. could certainly agree with his anger over what's happened, G'Kar
  251. has to try and overcome that and even transcend it.
