  19. Plot Points
  20. * Delenn has formed a new Grey Council, with the worker caste
  21. holding 5 of the 9 positions. The position of leader is reserved
  22. for "The One who is to come."
  23. * In the days before Valen, when caste wars erupted, the warring
  24. leaders would gather in the temple of Varenni, which is equipped
  25. with planetwide broadcast facilities and a device called the
  26. Starfire Wheel. The Starfire Wheel would consume the opposing
  27. leaders in fire. Whichever one willing was to die for the
  28. rightness of their side would remain in the fire until death; that
  29. caste would lead.
  30. * Unable to find work, Lyta has rejoined the Psi Corps in name only,
  31. striking a deal with Bester to give him custody over her body when
  32. she dies so he can try to understand what the Vorlons did to her.
  33. In exchange, the Corps will list her as a member when potential
  34. clients try to do a background check on her.
  35. * Bester is directly involved in whatever was done to Garibaldi.
  36. Among other things, Bester's plan is to pull Garibaldi further and
  37. further from his former associates, though the ultimate purpose is
  38. still unclear.
  39. * William Edgars, Garibaldi's employer, is extremely secretive;
  40. though he's one of the wealthiest men in the Earth Alliance, no
  41. pictures of him have ever been published. He also claims to have
  42. an intense distrust of telepaths and refuses to let any of his
  43. high-level employees work with them.
  44. Unanswered Questions
  45. * Who is The One who is to come? (See [21]Analysis)
  46. * What will happen to Shakiri? Does he still lead the warrior caste?
  47. * What were Delenn's instructions to Lennier?
  48. * What is Bester's plan for Garibaldi?
  49. * What happened between Zack and Bester after Bester provoked
  50. Garibaldi?
  51. Analysis
  52. * The One who is to come may be Sheridan; in [22]"War Without End,"
  53. Zathras referred to him as "The One who will be." The main thing
  54. arguing against it being Sheridan is the generally xenophobic
  55. attitude expressed by many Minbari in the past (e.g. Callenn in
  56. [23]"Atonement.") On the other hand, perhaps such xenophobia is
  57. only a disease of the warrior and religious castes; the worker
  58. caste might have less trouble accepting a human as their leader.
  59. Another candidate is David, Sheridan and Delenn's future child
  60. ([24]"War Without End, Part Two.") As a direct descendant of all
  61. three of The One, and a partial Minbari genetically, he might be
  62. more palatable.
  63. She might even have meant Sinclair: in [25]"Atonement," she
  64. mentioned Valen's body was never found, and at least one Minbari
  65. ritual, the extra placesetting seen in [26]"Confessions and
  66. Lamentations," indicates a belief in Valen's eventual return.
  67. It's also possible Delenn didn't intend her comment in any sort of
  68. prophetic way. She may simply have been referring to the next head
  69. of the Grey Council. The Minbari went ten years between leaders
  70. after Dukhat's death; perhaps there will be a similar period of
  71. mourning for Neroon, and the new leader won't be chosen for a
  72. while.
  73. * Both Sheridan and Delenn have accepted death (Sheridan with Lorien
  74. in [27]"Whatever Happened to Mr. Garibaldi?") Will the experience
  75. change Delenn as it changed Sheridan? Arguably, this isn't the
  76. first time for Delenn -- she accepted at least the possibility of
  77. death in [28]"Confessions and Lamentations" and gave herself in
  78. exchange for Sheridan in [29]"Comes the Inquisitor."
  79. * Despite Delenn's denial, the religious caste members on her ship
  80. in [30]"Rumors, Bargains and Lies" were at least partially right:
  81. her plan _did_ involve surrendering to the warrior caste, if only
  82. temporarily. If Lennier's reaction was at all typical, that must
  83. have come as a horrible blow to her caste when they heard about
  84. it.
  85. * Delenn's line to Shakiri, "The warrior caste started this war. Now
  86. the religious caste has ended it," echoes the lesson Sheridan
  87. learned from his father ([31]"Severed Dreams") -- "Never start a
  88. fight, but always finish it."
  89. * Neroon's loyalties at the beginning of the episode were unclear.
  90. Shakiri's contempt for life clearly convinced Neroon that Delenn's
  91. plan was the right way to go. But would he have carried out her
  92. plan if Shakiri hadn't been so fanatical and had been able to
  93. provide some valid justification for the war?
  94. * Neroon's sacrifice will probably play much better in the long run
  95. than Delenn's death would have. Shakiri's fear and actions brought
  96. dishonor to the Warrior caste; had they simply lost to the
  97. religious caste the resentment and stain of dishonor would have
  98. remained.
  99. By sacrificing himself for Delenn, Neroon gave honor back to the
  100. warriors, since one of their own remained and died in the
  101. Starwheel. His conversion to religious caste assured that the
  102. honor would be shared with them as well.
  103. Neroon's last-minute conversion meant both a religious and a
  104. warrior caste member perished on the wheel. Thus, technically,
  105. neither caste won, just as Delenn wanted.
  106. * Neroon wasn't the first Minbari to switch castes. His former
  107. commander, Branmer, was originally religious caste but switched to
  108. warrior caste during the Earth-Minbari War ([32]"Legacies.")
  109. * Neroon's interaction with Delenn revolves around sacrifice. In
  110. [33]"Grey 17 Is Missing," he was ready to attack or possibly kill
  111. her, but yielded when he saw that Marcus was ready to sacrifice
  112. his life for her sake. Here, he himself made that sacrifice. At
  113. the end of "Grey 17," Marcus asked Neroon, "Next time you want a
  114. revelation, could you possibly find a way that's not quite so
  115. uncomfortable?" Apparently not.
  116. * While Delenn was bringing peace to her people, Sheridan was
  117. preparing to go to war with his. What will Delenn think of his
  118. decision when she returns?
  119. * Ivanova's broadcast mentioned a Starfury squadron defecting to
  120. Proxima 3. How many Earth ships have gone over to the resistance?
  121. Presumably the Alexander is still at large ([34]"Severed Dreams.")
  122. Are there other ships of that caliber, and if so, will they take
  123. orders from Sheridan?
  124. * Bester implied he'd seen the Voice of the Resistance broadcasts.
  125. Does that mean the broadcasts are in fact reaching Earth and/or
  126. Mars, or has he simply seen them because he travels a lot in the
  127. course of his job?
  128. * Bester's contract says he gets Lyta's body if she dies of natural
  129. causes. Would the telepath disease in [35]"Conflicts of Interest"
  130. count as natural causes? If so, Bester and the Corps may have a
  131. specific reason to want to gain control of the cure. Perhaps
  132. Bester was the one responsible for sending the telepaths to try to
  133. procure it.
  134. * Lyta is slowly lifting the veil of secrecy she's maintained about
  135. the Vorlons and their changes to her. In [36]"Epiphanies," she was
  136. only willing to obliquely acknowledge the possibility that
  137. something might have happened. Here, she tacitly admitted it to
  138. Bester, and told Garibaldi in no uncertain terms that she wasn't a
  139. mere P5 any more.
  140. * Will Lyta be more willing to scan Garibaldi now that he has, from
  141. her point of view, turned against her? If she were to discover
  142. evidence of Bester's involvement in whatever was done to
  143. Garibaldi, she'd presumably want to investigate and find out what
  144. Bester was up to. Of course, she might still consider Garibaldi's
  145. privacy a more compelling concern, and presumably whatever
  146. programming he received would prevent him from agreeing to be
  147. scanned.
  148. * Sheridan's insistence that Lyta move to smaller quarters to help
  149. the station stay financially afloat is somewhat hypocritical,
  150. given his refusal to do the same in [37]"A Race Through Dark
  151. Places." Lyta made the same argument Sheridan did against being
  152. forcibly moved: her value to the station entitles her to special
  153. treatment.
  154. It's worth noting that Zack said the order came from Station
  155. Resources, not from Sheridan himself, but presumably if there were
  156. a reasonable chance Sheridan would overturn the order, Zack would
  157. have asked him before burdening Lyta with the news.
  158. And given Bester's presence on the station, was Zack even relaying
  159. a real order? Bester might have planted the belief in such an
  160. order in Zack's mind without Zack being any the wiser.
  161. * This is the second time Zack has been asked to relay bad news to
  162. someone close: first Garibaldi in [38]"Conflicts of Interest," and
  163. now Lyta, who appears to have warmed up considerably to Zack since
  164. he brought her pizza in [39]"Epiphanies." Though Zack is clearly
  165. loyal to Sheridan, bearing bad news to friends probably won't have
  166. any positive effect on his attitude.
  167. * Zack no longer calls Garibaldi "chief." Likely he's given up hope
  168. of Garibaldi's return. Any respect Zack had for Garibaldi was
  169. probably destroyed by Garibaldi's use of a duplicate identicard to
  170. get past customs ([40]"Conflicts of Interest.")
  171. Notes
  172. * Cartoonist Scott Adams, creator of the [41]"Dilbert" comic strip,
  173. has a cameo appearance in this episode. A [42]press release about
  174. his appearance is available.
  175. Mr. Adams' lost dog and cat are no doubt a reference to the
  176. characters of Dogbert and Catbert from the comic strip. Dogbert is
  177. constantly scheming to take over the world.
  178. * The new Grey Council (spellings approximate): Dalidi and Burli of
  179. the religious caste, Mazik and Shaka of the warrior caste, and
  180. Dulann, Katz, Zaca, Nur, and Barenn of the worker caste.
  181. * The title of this episode echoes G'Kar's closing monologue in
  182. [43]"Z'ha'dum": "The future is all around us, waiting, in moments
  183. of transition, to be born in moments of revelation. No one knows
  184. the shape of that future or where it will take us. We know only
  185. that it is always born in pain."
  186. * The security guard may have been stumped by Bester's Dickens quote
  187. because it wasn't quite right. In "A Christmas Carol," Marley's
  188. Ghost said, "Mankind was my business," not "Humanity is my
  189. business."
  190. * Edgars claimed to be available 24 hours a day. The Martian day is
  191. closer to 25 Earth hours long. But even now, scientists divide the
  192. Martian day into 24 Martian hours, each slightly longer than a
  193. terrestrial hour. It's reasonable to assume that that practice
  194. continues into the 23rd century. ([44]More on Mars)
  195. * This episode takes place around August 3, 2261. August 3 is a
  196. recurring date in the series: August 3, 2258 was the date of the
  197. initial mayday from the raiders in [45]"Signs and Portents;"
  198. August 3, 2260 was the date the Shadows began attacking openly
  199. ([46]"Interludes and Examinations;") and August 3, 2261 was the
  200. date in Bester's log entry in this episode.
  201. * In the original US broadcast, the cruiser firing on the commercial
  202. transports was shown as the Agamemnon, Sheridan's old ship. That
  203. was a production slipup (see [47]JMS Speaks) and in later airings,
  204. the cruiser was labeled the Pollux.
  205. jms speaks
  206. * _In response to an earlier JMS message saying the cruiser wasn't
  207. the Agamemnon_
  208. I have to recant my correction.
  209. The image as shown in the monitor was supposed to be shown *only*
  210. on the monitor, not blown up. The animators figured, it'll be too
  211. small to read the name on it, so we may as well grab a ship out of
  212. the library rather than building a new one (a sensible
  213. choice)...but when John and I got into editing, we grabbed the
  214. original video and did that close-up...and neither of us, NObody,
  215. ever even noticed the Aggy name until after it was mentioned
  216. here...and I then checked, and to my chagrin, it was there.
  217. But in true Soviet Revisionist fashion, you can be assured that
  218. down the road, this will mysteriously be replaced by another
  219. shot....
  220. * _If you had been 100% sure there'd be a season 5, would this have
  221. been the season 4 finale?_
  222. No, this could never have been the finale for 4.
  223. * _Will John Vickery return, perhaps as Mr. Welles from [48]"The
  224. Fall of Night?"_
  225. No, not as that role, but we're definitely open to using him in
  226. other roles, as with Wayne Alexander.
  227. * We'll keep our eyes out for a way to bring him around again, same
  228. as with Wayne.
  229. * _How does this story relate to G'Kar's speech?_
  230. In a way, it was the second half of G'Kar's sentence...that life
  231. can be broken down into moments of transition and moments of
  232. revelation...and there with Neroon at the end we had both.
  233. * _Did he really realize he belonged in the religious caste, or did
  234. he just do it for Delenn's sake?_
  235. Whether it was true or not, he knew his actions would bring the
  236. castes back together...so out of respect for the dead, best to
  237. leave the issue unresolved, and accept his gesture for what it
  238. was.
  239. * _What was wrong with Walter Koenig's hand?_
  240. As for Walter...he made the decision to play Bester with a
  241. deformed or useless hand, which he's compensating for as a teep.
  242. * _Then how does he put his gloves on?_
  243. Ask Walter.
  244. * What's been great about B5 has been the chance to give many
  245. talented actors like Walter and others a chance to show the many
  246. other hues and colors they are capable of delivering, but which
  247. were rarely seen because the material didn't allow them the
  248. opportunity. I know Walter's loved it, and it's been great for us
  249. as well.
  250. * _Were Delenn and Neroon secretly in contact, or was the whole plan
  251. worked out in advance?_
  252. They were worked out in advance, and the instructions were for
  253. posthumous use.
  254. * _Did Delenn's instructions include a message for Sheridan?_
  255. Almost certainly.
  256. * _Are any members of the old Grey Council on the new one?_
  257. Yeah, some of the new council would've been on the old one.
  258. And Bester was named for a well-known SF writer, now gone.
  259. * The Grey Council stucture, visually, is designed to bring the
  260. Starfire wheel to mind. Valen, being something of a smart cookie,
  261. figured it would be wise to tie in whatever he was doing to the
  262. traditions that preceded him. So they're arranged in a circle,
  263. with a series of lights above them, and the one central light (for
  264. Dukhat, for instance) reserved for the one who had endured and
  265. grown to leadership, but through a somewhat less violent means.
  266. "Finally, the diversity of cultures on Babylon 5 must be a
  267. satisfaction for you as a writer to have so many different voices
  268. to express. "MoT" for me was almost like seguing between
  269. playwrights -- Damon Runyan (Garibaldi) to Oscar Wilde (Bester) to
  270. Aeschylus (Minbar). One of the things I have found most appealing
  271. about Babylon 5 as a whole is that the language is similar to the
  272. language of the stage. That seems rare in a television milieu
  273. defined for the most part by diseases-of-the-week, talk-show spew
  274. and courtroom maneuverings."
  275. Yeah, I like that part a lot, being able to write in lots of
  276. different voices, lots of different styles. You have to remember
  277. that I cut my teeth writing dialogue back when I was writing plays
  278. and getting them produced. I love theater, love plays, and love
  279. really well done or rich dialogue. So it echoes that now...which
  280. as you say isn't necessarily the style of dialogue seen on most
  281. television (which is why a few react weirdly to it), but I like
  282. it, and it's my show....
  283. * _Lyta refused to scan Garibaldi, but was willing to scan the
  284. Centauri in [49]"Passing Through Gethsemane."_
  285. Yes, it's an inconsistency; because humans are inconsistent. But
  286. it's only an inconsistency subject to Lyta's
  287. rationalizations...which are quite reasonable.
  288. She didn't know the Centauri; she knew Garibaldi...they knew
  289. beyond a shadow of a doubt that Brother Edward's *life* was in
  290. jeapordy, and that this person may hold the key to saving his life
  291. and every instant they waited meant he could be dying, whereas
  292. there is no such crisis in the Garibaldi situation...they were
  293. able to hide her identity from the Centauri whereas they would not
  294. be able to do so with her and Garibaldi....
  295. The decision to scan or not to scan is essentially a moral or
  296. ethical decision. When someone's life is on the line, that raises
  297. one ethical concern, as opposed to Zack just having a vague
  298. suspicion about Garibaldi's character and asking her to engage in
  299. a fishing expedition. There is a quantum difference between the
  300. two of them.
  301. Would a physician give someone the tools necessary to end his
  302. life? No. Would he do so if the person were chronically ill and in
  303. constant, terrible pain? Very possibly. It's the *context*. You
  304. can't expect people to act the same in every situation regardless
  305. of context, context is everything.
  306. People are not robots, they rationalize, they are inconsistent,
  307. but they generally have *reasons* for it that they can justify. As
  308. somebody once said, rationalizations are more important than sex,
  309. because you can *go* a day without sex.... _[Ed. note: this is a
  310. quote from "The Big Chill."]_
  311. * _Why didn't Lyta go to Sheridan for help?_
  312. I think Lyta had just emotionally gotten to the place where she
  313. had to do something on her own rather than continuing to rely on
  314. the kindness of strangers.
  315. * _Did Bester tell Edgars that Garibaldi had hired Lyta?_
  316. Nope.
  317. * _Is Edgars really Bester?_
  318. Not a chance.
  319. Edgars is played by Efrem Zimbalist Jr., which by itself precludes
  320. that.
  321. * Bear in mind that Edgars also has Wade working for him right there
  322. on the station, and he is more or less Garibaldi's liaison with
  323. Edgars, so logically that would be his source of information.
