  17. Plot Points
  18. * The League of Non-Aligned Worlds has agreed to give the White Star
  19. fleet authority to operate as a police force along its borders.
  20. * Civil war has broken out in the Minbari capital city.
  21. * Three quarters of Clark's cabinet resigned in protest of his
  22. martial law decree.
  23. Unanswered Questions
  24. * Is Neroon really betraying Delenn?
  25. * The episode focused on the religious and warrior castes. What
  26. happened to the worker caste? Are they participating in the
  27. fighting, and if so, which side have they taken?
  28. Analysis
  29. * Will the Non-Aligned Worlds' pledge to help Sheridan with any
  30. larger missions extend to his conflict with President Clark? Even
  31. in its diminished state, the combined forces of the Non-Aligned
  32. Worlds' navies would likely be a great asset if the conflict came
  33. down to a direct, prolonged series of battles. On the other hand,
  34. intervening in internal Earth matters isn't what the ambassadors
  35. had in mind; they might balk at sending their ships to die for the
  36. cause of overthrowing Earth's government.
  37. * By allowing the White Star fleet to patrol Centauri space in
  38. search of the Drakh (among others,) Londo has given Sheridan
  39. direct influence over the ability of the Shadows' allies to exact
  40. their revenge on Centauri Prime. Perhaps that's the source of
  41. Londo's comment in [18]"War Without End" about Sheridan allowing
  42. the Shadows' dark servants to slip through to Centauri Prime; if
  43. Sheridan uses the White Star fleet for some larger mission as he
  44. hints he might, it'll presumably be at the cost of Centauri
  45. Prime's defense against the Drakh.
  46. * During the conversation between Londo and the Drazi ambassador,
  47. Londo's duplicity is underscored by the staging of the scene. In
  48. most of the scene, two images of Londo can be seen: his reflection
  49. in the mirror or his portrait. The rest of the time his face is
  50. obscured by a curtain.
  51. * In the past, Delenn has attempted to preserve Lennier's innocence
  52. (e.g. by trying to leave him behind in [19]"Atonement.") But from
  53. Lennier's point of view, she has an innocence of her own, and he
  54. sees himself as its guardian.
  55. * Neroon may not be betraying Delenn at all; he told Shakiri the he
  56. knew the religious caste's counterattack plans, but Delenn made no
  57. mention of a counterattack. It's possible his departure was, in
  58. fact, all part of Delenn's plan; Lennier wasn't privy to the
  59. conversation between Delenn and Neroon, so he wouldn't know the
  60. details and would be fooled by Neroon's departure.
  61. * By revealing how much she relies on Lennier, Delenn may have given
  62. valuable information to an opponent. Neroon was honorable enough
  63. and helped Lennier, and seems uninterested in directly battling or
  64. hurting Delenn (if he'd been interested in that, he wasted several
  65. opportunities while on her ship.) But if Neroon passes the
  66. information along to Shakiri, Lennier may find himself in danger.
  67. * Neroon said of the situation on Minbar, "We are a world gone mad."
  68. That's the same thing one of the council members told Delenn in
  69. [20]"Atonement," before declaring, as Neroon did, that the fire
  70. would have to burn itself out and couldn't be stopped. Yet the
  71. Earth-Minbari War did stop abruptly; perhaps the same will happen
  72. in this case.
  73. * Neroon's comment about loving a good mystery also echoed
  74. [21]"Atonement," in which Delenn said to the Grey Council that
  75. mysteries are a gift from the universe and shouldn't be ignored.
  76. * The religious caste member said he heard Delenn say, "The
  77. religious caste could not be allowed to win this war." But she
  78. actually said, "The warrior caste cannot be allowed to win this
  79. war. The religious caste cannot be allowed to win either." Was he
  80. simply embellishing a half-overheard comment (e.g. if he only
  81. heard the second sentence up to "win") or did he choose to ignore
  82. or lie about the context?
  83. * The religious caste has been the butt of jokes about surrendering
  84. "ever since the war," according to the same religious caste
  85. member. Clearly that can't be referring to the Shadow War, since
  86. they didn't surrender. Does the comment indicate that most Minbari
  87. still consider the Earth-Minbari War to be the major war of recent
  88. memory? Since the warrior caste is the group making the jokes, the
  89. implication is that they didn't particularly participate in the
  90. Shadow War.
  91. * The two storylines in the episode can be seen as point and
  92. counterpoint on the subject of deception and secrecy (the title is
  93. evidence that this isn't an accident.) Delenn kept her plans
  94. secret from her compatriots and nearly died with them as a result.
  95. Neroon was attacked for the same reason. Sheridan kept secrets as
  96. well, and asked Franklin and Londo to lie for him, and it helped
  97. his plans come to fruition.
  98. Lennier's deception played into the theme; he kept the true nature
  99. of the sabotage from Delenn, with no immediate ill effect.
  100. However, it's possible that by maintaining Delenn's excessive
  101. faith in her caste, Lennier in fact deprived her of vital
  102. information she'd do well to take into account in the future.
  103. Ivanova held fast to the ideal of truth, but every other major
  104. player in the story participated in some form of deception: the
  105. rebellious religious caste members hid their plot, the League
  106. ambassadors kept their "knowledge" of the new enemy from Sheridan,
  107. and Neroon lied to either Delenn or Shakiri about his intentions.
  108. Notes
  109. * Delenn mentioned this as the second time she'd seen Lennier near
  110. death. The first was in [22]"Convictions," in which he risked his
  111. life to save Londo Mollari.
  112. * Ivanova tells Sheridan that Marcus is waiting for him on channel
  113. 4. That's a reference to the network that shows B5 in the UK.
  114. * Editing glitch: during the opening scene, a piece of food appears
  115. on Marcus' fork while the camera shifts to Sheridan; the scene
  116. shifts again and he hasn't picked the food up yet.
  117. jms speaks
  118. * The Sheridan stuff was fun, in that I got to play Sheridan as the
  119. one being manipulative for a change, smart for a change...not just
  120. Londo or the usual suspects. It made for a nifty change of pace.
  121. And yeah, Mira brought a lot of truth to this episode...and will
  122. bring even more in next week.
  123. * _Ivanova looked like she was reading from a teleprompter._
  124. Yeah, we had Claudia use a teleprompter there to add to the sense
  125. of having to read something...and enjoy the happy-go-lucky
  126. Sheridan...it's the last you'll see of him for a long time....
  127. * _Lennier seems to be doing more peacemaking than Delenn. Is he the
  128. real bridge between races? Why does the religious caste follow
  129. Delenn?_
  130. No, I wouldn't say Lennier is a bridge in any sense along those
  131. lines.
  132. Delenn, you must understand, is a True Seeker, and among the
  133. religious caste there isn't much more admirable than
  134. that...combined with the fact that she *did* fulfill prophecy, she
  135. *was* the chosen of Dukhat, she *did* help end the Shadow
  136. War...yeah, she's had some problems here and there, but what
  137. important leader doesn't? Any one of those items would be a
  138. sufficient crown on a lifetime of achievement...the cumulative
  139. effect is quite daunting and impressive.
  140. * _Are Lennier's patience, humor, and devotion unique?_
  141. No, many Minbari share in those traits.
  142. * "Are tears a normal Minbari physical reaction, or is weeping (for
  143. Delenn) one of the changes mandated by her chrysalitic"
  144. We've seen Delenn cry before, when she and G'Kar were in her
  145. quarters and she was explining why she did not get involved in the
  146. Narn/Centauri war.
  147. * _How did Londo see an Earth sitcom if all broadcasts to B5 are
  148. being jammed?_
  149. Easy. The incident Londo is mentioning happened prior to the
  150. blackout. He never said it *just* happened, he said the *last*
  151. time Rebo and Zooty did their routine, everybody was doing it.
  152. * _Were Rebo and Zooty references to real people?_
  153. No, not intended as tributes to anyone, just a cool sounding pair
  154. of names (but also annoying sounding).
