  19. Plot Points
  20. * Wade and his group still consider Garibaldi expendable.
  21. * Lise Hampton, Garibaldi's ex-lover ([21]"A Voice in the
  22. Wilderness") divorced her first husband and eventually married one
  23. of the richest men on Mars, William Edgars. Among other things,
  24. Edgars is the owner of the largest medical research center on the
  25. planet.
  26. * Some medical researchers believe that one of the genes responsible
  27. for telepathy in humans has the potential to mutate into some form
  28. of communicable disease, lethal to other telepaths. There may be a
  29. cure, but there are those on Earth who'd rather the basis of the
  30. cure be destroyed to rid Earth of telepaths.
  31. * Sheridan has proposed to assign the Rangers to patrol the borders
  32. between the various parts of alien-controlled space, protecting
  33. civilian transports from the Drakh ([22]"Lines of Communication")
  34. and others.
  35. * The Centauri have had contact with the Drakh in the past, but long
  36. enough ago that nowadays they're considered little more than
  37. legends.
  38. * Zathras had nine brothers, all named Zathras but with slightly
  39. different intonations.
  40. Unanswered Questions
  41. * What exactly was the substance Lise was picking up?
  42. * Were Wade and Lise and their contact telling the truth about the
  43. telepath virus, or was the substance something else entirely?
  44. * Who were the gunmen? Were they with Psi Corps, or were they rogue
  45. telepaths? What did they mean by the phrase, "To the future?" (See
  46. [23]Analysis)
  47. * Why didn't Garibaldi fire at the telepath?
  48. * Did Wade know about Garibaldi's past association with Lise? Was
  49. she part of the test, to see how emotional stress would affect his
  50. performance?
  51. * Does William Edgars' job offer conflict with whatever plans Wade
  52. and his cohorts have for Garibaldi, or is his employment just
  53. another part of the plan?
  54. * Why didn't Edgars show Garibaldi his face?
  55. * What was in the message Lise left for Garibaldi?
  56. * Why did she send it using her maiden name?
  57. * Did G'Kar and Londo take Sheridan up on his offer?
  58. Analysis
  59. * If Garibaldi takes the job, will he be working close to William
  60. Edgars? That would imply he'll also have frequent contact with
  61. Lise, which likely wouldn't be easy for either of them.
  62. * His consideration of the job offer is at odds with the glimpse of
  63. his programming, if that's what it was, in [24]"The Illusion of
  64. Truth." In that flashback, Garibaldi recalled being drilled over
  65. and over with the idea that he worked for nobody but his captors.
  66. Of course, if Edgars is involved with his captors, that might not
  67. be inconsistent.
  68. It's also possible his captors _want_ to get him close to Edgars,
  69. and that by taking the job he'd in fact be following their
  70. implanted orders.
  71. * Edgars claimed to have checked up on Garibaldi. Checked up on him
  72. how? Garibaldi himself has said on more than one occasion that his
  73. past is checkered at best, and his history isn't too closely
  74. guarded a secret (for example, the Senator knew about him in
  75. ([25]"The Gathering.") Maybe Edgars was taking Garibaldi's
  76. performance as security chief on Babylon 5 into account, or maybe
  77. his "checking up" involved talking to whoever captured Garibaldi
  78. ([26]"Whatever Happened to Mr. Garibaldi?")
  79. * The Daffy Duck cartoon Garibaldi was watching (1953's [27]"Duck
  80. Amuck!") can be viewed as a metaphor for his situation; depending
  81. on what was done to him after his capture ([28]"Whatever Happened
  82. to Mr. Garibaldi?") he may well no longer be in control of his own
  83. fate, and is certainly being influenced by forces he can't detect.
  84. * If the researchers are correct and the human telepathy genes can
  85. indeed mutate into a lethal virus, what are the parameters? Likely
  86. it's something that's telepathically transmitted. For example, it
  87. might cause a telepath to broadcast noise on whatever medium
  88. telepaths use to read thoughts. Telepathic interference can cause
  89. physical effects (Ben Zayn doubling over in [29]"Eyes," or Lyta's
  90. bloodied eyes in [30]"Walkabout") so it's not inconceivable that
  91. telepathic broadcasts of the right type could kill someone attuned
  92. to them.
  93. * Which begs the question, was this some kind of genetic timebomb
  94. intentionally implanted by the Vorlons when they modified humans
  95. to give them telepathic ability ([31]"Z'ha'dum?") Since the
  96. Vorlons, according to Morden, created human telepaths to use as
  97. weapons against the Shadows, perhaps the Vorlons also put a time
  98. limit on human telepathy so it wouldn't remain once the upcoming
  99. conflict with the Shadows was resolved.
  100. That would put a different spin on the disappearance of Narn
  101. telepaths ([32]"Ship of Tears.") The Book of G'Quan was probably
  102. correct about the Shadows killing most of the Narn telepaths. But
  103. maybe the reason the gene never resurfaced in the Narn population
  104. wasn't that it wasn't strong enough, as G'Kar supposed, but that
  105. it was only designed to last a few generations, and once the
  106. previous Shadow War was over, its time simply ran out. Of course,
  107. that assumes the Vorlons implanted telepathy into the Narn.
  108. * The threat isn't limited to Psi Corps; Ivanova's latent telepathy
  109. makes her vulnerable to any sort of disease that's transmitted
  110. between telepaths.
  111. * The fact that Wade was cooperating with Lise in her effort to get
  112. the vial into her husband's hands implies that he's at least
  113. somewhat sympathetic to telepaths, and perhaps to the Psi Corps.
  114. If he were one of the people who wanted to see all telepaths dead,
  115. presumably he'd've arranged for the vial to quietly vanish on its
  116. way to Lise. That ties into the apparent contradiction mentioned
  117. above between Garibaldi's programming ([33]"The Illusion of
  118. Truth") and his consideration of Edgars' job offer.
  119. * The telepathic assassins' closing phrase bears some similarity to
  120. a description of another telepath: Talia Winters in [34]"A Race
  121. Through Dark Places."
  122. _Lurker:_ You tipped the balance. I felt it when we were joined.
  123. You're more than you think you are.
  124. _Talia:_ Then what am I?
  125. _Lurker:_ The future.
  126. * The last time Garibaldi resigned, even briefly ([35]"In the Shadow
  127. of Z'ha'dum") he offered up his gun, his station ID, and his link.
  128. So did the security staff who resigned rather than join Nightwatch
  129. in [36]"Point of No Return." Why did Garibaldi keep them this
  130. time? Was he perhaps intending to return at some point?
  131. * Sheridan said of Garibaldi, "I don't like the company he's been
  132. keeping." How does Sheridan know what kind of company Garibaldi
  133. has been keeping? Is he having Garibaldi watched? And is he
  134. referring specifically to Wade's people? If so, what does Sheridan
  135. know about them?
  136. * Was there a reason Sheridan kept the lights in his office low when
  137. he met others there, or was it just a directorial touch?
  138. * Franklin commented to Ivanova that Mars was cold. But in
  139. [37]"Racing Mars," the tunnels where Franklin and Marcus were
  140. staying were noted as uncomfortably warm. Significant, or was
  141. Franklin simply referring to the surface, which is indeed cold?
  142. Notes
  143. * Continuity glitch: Lise appears to have discovered a
  144. lightning-fast means of travel. At the end of the episode,
  145. Franklin and Ivanova walk past her while she's waiting to leave
  146. the station. Then Garibaldi is berated by Sheridan. He returns to
  147. his quarters and takes a shower. As soon as he's done, he gets a
  148. message from Edgars claiming that Lise has arrived home safely,
  149. even though it's been established ([38]"Messages from Earth") that
  150. travel between B5 and Earth's solar system takes days.
  151. * In [39]"Babylon Squared," Zathras complained, "Zathras warned, but
  152. nobody listens to poor Zathras." In this episode, that's doubly
  153. true: even _Zathras_ doesn't listen to Zathras.
  154. * G'Kar's artificial eye is now brown, rather than red like his
  155. natural one or blue like its initial color ([40]"Atonement.")
  156. * The onscreen logo displayed while Garibaldi spoke to William
  157. Edgars read "EI" (presumably short for "Edgars Industries" or some
  158. such.) Underneath, it read, "Mars - Phobos - Deimos." Phobos and
  159. Deimos are the two moons of Mars. Presumably this implies that
  160. there are people living or working on those moons, which in fact
  161. are little more than large asteroids and would thus be attractive
  162. for microgravity pharmaceutical research.
  163. * William Edgars' voice was played by Efrem Zimbalist Jr.
  164. * The telepaths' PPG blasts penetrated the floor of the air duct. In
  165. [41]"Grey 17 Is Missing," Garibaldi commented that PPGs are used
  166. rather than traditional guns because they don't penetrate hulls.
  167. Of course, an outer hull is likely quite a lot thicker than an air
  168. duct wall, and likely made of material with a higher melting
  169. temperature, so this most likely isn't a contradiction.
  170. jms speaks
  171. * BTW, there's another example of a long single take coming up soon,
  172. on Epsilon 3, which is all I'll specify. I kinda wanted the scene
  173. to play itself out, without cutting, and to show just how
  174. amazingly capable some of our actors can be. We're talking here
  175. almost 4 minutes of footage, not one cut in the whole thing, very
  176. fast dialogue, and not a single muffed line, with the performances
  177. working wonderfully. You'll know it when you see it.
  178. * Our cast invariably comes in knowing full scenes, and can hit them
  179. without breaking or blowing a line. So we have a tendency at times
  180. to just let the master play out, keeping the intensity, which can
  181. sometimes be broken by too much cross-editing. (Note that the
  182. Zathras/Ivanova scene a few episodes back is *entirely* one shot,
  183. four minutes.)
  184. * Re: Daffy...I knew that cartoon, and had that definitely in mind
  185. when I wrote the script. Took some maneuvering to get WB to let us
  186. use that much of it.
  187. * Re: the cartoon...I'm a big WB cartoon fan, and knew that one very
  188. well, and there were two places where it would've fit with the
  189. story; the other one, which I almost used, was when you see two
  190. Daffy's arguing with each other.
  191. Re: the CGI...we've been fairly conventional with the CGI in
  192. recent seasons, we're trying to get a bit more adventurous.
  193. The Lise flashback material is all exactly as was filmed for
  194. "Babylon Squared." I think we used a few more pieces of the
  195. original footage, but it was all stet.
  196. _Why didn't we see what happened to Delenn, since she left in the
  197. previous episode?_
  198. Re: Delenn...these episodes happen close to one another in time,
  199. so you have to allow travel time for her to get to Minbar.
  200. * _Lise was the typical "woman in distress."_
  201. Re: Lise...well, everybody can't be a fighter; we've had guys and
  202. the occasional female character who isn't used to being shot at. I
  203. daresay I'm not terribly used to being shot at, and someone who's
  204. mainly a civilian would probably react about that same way. It's
  205. just a matter of showing that diversity realistically rather than
  206. saying, "Okay, let's have a helpless female now." Having every
  207. female (or male) hard-nosed and laughing off PPG bursts is as
  208. unrealistic as its opposite.
  209. * _Was there anything important in Lise's message?_
  210. No, nothing you need worry about.
  211. * _Why didn't Edgars show his face?_
  212. As we'll learn shortly, he doesn't want his face seen around.
  213. But we'll see him soon enough.
  214. (And the voice belongs to Efram Zimbalist Jr.)
  215. * _Did the PPG blasts melt through the air conditioning duct wall?_
  216. This is substantially correct. The PPG blast is extremely hot, and
  217. will melt through the plastic coating and the metal lining inside
  218. the tube. The entire energy of a PPG will not come through the
  219. tube (unless by some coincidence the exact same area is hit twice
  220. or three times), and I believe that this was propoerly portrayed
  221. in the sequence. Even if it isn't the entire energy blast, it will
  222. hurt like hell and de-mobilize an individual meat packet (person)
  223. for the bad guys to come get later.
  224. It did take a *very* long time to burn through the bulkhead door
  225. to allow them access to the hallway, and said door did mildly glow
  226. in the affected areas prior to melting through. The station hull
  227. is even more heat resistant.
