  19. Plot Points
  20. * At least one race, the Drakh, made its home on Z'ha'dum during the
  21. Shadows' tenure there. They evacuated before Z'ha'dum's
  22. destruction and are in search of a new home and revenge against
  23. the people who defeated their masters.
  24. * Marcus and Franklin have convinced the resistance movement on
  25. Earth and Mars to follow Sheridan's lead, and to refrain from
  26. future terrorist attacks aimed at destabilizing Earth's
  27. government.
  28. * Ivanova is preparing for an additional job, as head of the "Voice
  29. of the Resistance," an attempt to counter ISN by broadcasting
  30. opposition views, as well as messages intended for the resistance
  31. fighters themselves, to Mars and Earth.
  32. * ISN, meanwhile, seems to be preparing Earth's citizenry for an
  33. eventual assault on Babylon 5, building up public support for such
  34. a move in advance.
  35. * Sheridan was involved in the suppression of the food riots on Mars
  36. after the Earth-Minbari War, for which he's resented by some Mars
  37. residents.
  38. Unanswered Questions
  39. * Are the Drakh the only survivors of Z'ha'dum? How many of them
  40. remain?
  41. * Are the Drakh the ones responsible for planting Keepers on the
  42. Centauri Regent ([20]"Epiphanies") and Captain Jack ([21]"Racing
  43. Mars")?
  44. * Why did the Drakh emissary appear to shimmer? Do the Drakh have
  45. access to the Shadows' invisibility technology?
  46. * What does the warrior caste hope to gain by forcing the other
  47. castes out of cities?
  48. Analysis
  49. * Franklin has bought into Sheridan's cult of personality, though
  50. it's not entirely clear why. His reaction to the skeptical
  51. resistance leader is exactly the kind of thing Garibaldi
  52. complained about in [22]"Racing Mars," and may be
  53. counterproductive in that it makes Garibaldi's allegations all the
  54. more credible.
  55. * Phillipe bombed the Red Planet Hotel, which was where Franklin and
  56. Marcus were staying. Was the appearance of the Earth security
  57. forces there a coincidence, or were they after Franklin and
  58. Marcus?
  59. * Why does Sheridan think he has the power to promise Mars
  60. independence after Clark is out of office? Does Sheridan plan to
  61. assume the presidency himself? Or was that simply more
  62. improvisation on Franklin's part? Presumably not; it's unlikely
  63. Sheridan gave him the authority to make that kind of promise
  64. without consultation.
  65. * How will Sheridan break through Earth's jamming of outside
  66. broadcasts? Franklin was able to get a message back to Babylon 5,
  67. but presumably it's a thornier problem to try to broadcast
  68. programming to all of Earth. Perhaps he'll enlist the help of
  69. Draal; Epsilon 3 likely has the power to cut through whatever
  70. interference Earth can muster. Delenn is unlikely to be able to
  71. provide any Minbari assistance, considering what's going on on
  72. Minbar, though the White Star fleet might be useful mobile
  73. transmitters.
  74. * If Number One indeed treats all her former lovers like she treated
  75. Phillipe, Franklin may be in for a rough ride.
  76. * In the first scene with Franklin, Number One rubbed her neck,
  77. similar to Captain Jack before his Keeper was discovered
  78. ([23]"Racing Mars.") Any significance, or just a stiff neck?
  79. * The Drakh ships, especially the transport, looked more Vorlon in
  80. design than Shadow. Have they looted the Vorlon homeworld as well,
  81. or is it just a coincidence?
  82. * The Drakh aren't the only race who worked for the Shadows, though
  83. of course they might have been the only ones to escape with
  84. technology from Z'ha'dum. Neither the surgeons and pilot in
  85. [24]"Ship of Tears" nor the creature in [25]"The Long Dark" were
  86. Drakh in appearance, though the latter arguably bore a resemblance
  87. when it was shown briefly reflected in Mariah's tube.
  88. * It's also possible the Drakh weren't allies of the Shadows at all;
  89. the Vorlons may have similarly had minor races acting as aides,
  90. and those aides would likely be just as upset as the Shadows'
  91. about Sheridan and Delenn driving their masters away. Of course,
  92. the statement that the Drakh had just lost their home would seem
  93. to indicate that Delenn's supposition about their association with
  94. the Shadows was correct; the Vorlon homeworld is probably still
  95. intact.
  96. * The Drakh may have some kind of group mind. At the very least,
  97. they have a different notion of personal identity than most other
  98. races. They appear to regard the name "Drakh" as both a collective
  99. name and a personal one, and their emissary interrupted Forell
  100. before he could utter Delenn's name, dismissing it as
  101. "unimportant." On the other hand, they're familiar enough with the
  102. notion of individual names to recognize Delenn's once it was
  103. spoken.
  104. * Delenn's reaction to the destruction of White Star 16, while
  105. arguably justified, bore similarity to her reaction to the death
  106. of Dukhat: ordering a relentless attack on those responsible. Of
  107. course, this time she was in control of the situation and wasn't
  108. enraged, but it's interesting in light of her earlier comment that
  109. she wouldn't repeat the mistakes made during first contact with
  110. humanity.
  111. * Delenn commented to Sheridan that she felt humans could have been
  112. Minbar's most dangerous enemy due to their ability to form
  113. communities of diverse elements. This echoes her comment in
  114. [26]"And Now For a Word," in which she said that the forming of
  115. communities was one of humanity's greatest strengths.
  116. Notes
  117. * Marcus said he was from Arisia Colony. That's a reference to the
  118. Lensman series by E. E. "Doc" Smith.
  119. * Sheridan referred to the Drakh as "wild cards." And in fact,
  120. "Drakh" is "card" pronounced backwards.
  121. * One of the Minbari seen reacting in fear from the Drakh emissary
  122. is Dennis Michael, a CNN entertainment reporter and a big fan of
  123. the series. He was also a Narn in [27]"Comes the Inquisitor."
  124. * As the Drakh emissary entered the White Star's bridge, the lights
  125. on the wall dimmed.
  126. * The real reason the Drakh shimmered, according to special effects
  127. technician Ken Busick, was that the costume didn't look convincing
  128. enough. So to give the Drakh an otherworldly appearance, the scene
  129. was digitally manipulated in postproduction.
  130. jms speaks
  131. * _Why did Franklin send a video message?_
  132. So they could see him and know by seeing him that he arrived
  133. safely; a text message could be sent by *anyone* who could've
  134. intercepted them.
  135. * The issue of waste of bandwidth is not as big a deal to an
  136. advanced technology (from today's standards); also, any really
  137. good telepath could rip out those codes and keys in about 10
  138. seconds. Further, they would've had a password to use (as in "the
  139. board," which he used) to verify that he was all right and not
  140. being forced to make the call.
  141. * In that scenario, there is no such thing as ANY kind of secure
  142. communication, which puts us pretty much back where we started.
  143. * _About the Drakh ships_
  144. I indicated a flower-like design. With the lethalness behind them,
  145. it seemed like a nice contrast.
  146. * _White Star 16 wasn't too tough._
  147. Of course, you have no way of knowing how many previous hits it
  148. took during the fight, and are assuming it only got two.
  149. * _Why did Delenn run?_
  150. As she states in the episode, they were at that time *surrounded*
  151. and if they turned to fire, would get destroyed. Firepower doesn't
  152. solve every problem; one good hand-held Lancet missile can put
  153. down a full-sized cruiser if it hits right. They were in the
  154. MIDDLE of the Drakh, just as they said, and that's NOT a
  155. defensible position. They had to get away, outside that group, so
  156. they could mount an offensive. This they did.
