  18. Backplot
  19. * Telepaths who refuse to take sleeper drugs to suppress their
  20. abilities, or to join the Psi Corps, are sent to reeducation
  21. camps, one of which is on Mars. The Corps refers to them
  22. informally as "blips."
  23. * The Shadows killed most of the Narn telepaths a thousand years
  24. ago. They were driven off by G'Quan and the remaining telepaths.
  25. * Telepaths can disrupt the link between Shadow ships and their
  26. non-telepathic pilots. The Shadows have thus been infiltrating Psi
  27. Corps, taking control of it from inside to prevent it from being
  28. used as a weapon against them. They are also capturing rogue human
  29. telepaths and altering them with cybernetic implants, possibly
  30. with the intent of using them as telepath-proof pilots.
  31. * Telepaths can locate ships by focusing on the occupants' thought
  32. patterns. Their range is greatly expanded in hyperspace. Psi Corps
  33. kept that a secret to prevent the Earth military from putting its
  34. members on the front lines.
  35. * Psi Cops are trained to pilot all the latest Earth Alliance
  36. vessels.
  37. Unanswered Questions
  38. * Were Franklin and Bester able to save Carolyn?
  39. * Are the rest of the telepaths still in cryonic suspension and on
  40. B5? Where were they taken, if not?
  41. * How much more does Bester know about the Shadows and their
  42. involvement with the Corps?
  43. * Who were the aliens in Carolyn's flashback and on the bridge of
  44. the cargo ship?
  45. * Was Carolyn telekinetic, or did her modifications give her that
  46. ability? If the latter, are the Shadows telekinetic too?
  47. Analysis
  48. * Delenn still isn't being completely open with G'Kar -- she
  49. neglected to tell him about Kosh's involvement, for instance.
  50. Perhaps she knows of Kosh's manipulation of G'Kar ([19]"Dust to
  51. Dust") and doesn't want the illusion shattered.
  52. * Even someone as highly ranked as Bester isn't immune from the
  53. Corps' rules about arranged marriages. On the other hand, given
  54. his obvious sense of genetic superiority, he may feel it's his
  55. duty to the future of the human race to help breed a better
  56. telepath.
  57. * The mere presence of Bester stopped the Shadow warship from
  58. attacking the White Star (assuming it didn't stop to avoid risking
  59. damage to the "weapons components.") Was that because it couldn't
  60. get close enough to attack without Bester interfering with its
  61. pilot's bond? In any case, the effect is consistent with Talia's
  62. experience in [20]"In the Shadow of Z'ha'dum," in which she was
  63. able to sense, even see, the Shadows without consciously probing
  64. for them.
  65. * A telepath who consciously chooses to disrupt a Shadow ship might
  66. be even more dangerous to them, though that isn't clear.
  67. * Is there a reason the Shadows are choosing human telepaths in
  68. particular? Sheridan speculated that "they're using humans to
  69. pilot their ships." Is that universally true, or are humans simply
  70. one of a large number of races being used for that purpose? Would,
  71. for instance, a Centauri telepath be any good against a Shadow
  72. ship with a human pilot? The events on Narn suggest that
  73. telepathy's effect on the Shadows isn't race-specific.
  74. * If telepathy is a weapon against the Shadows, Sheridan may want to
  75. stock up on Dust ([21]"Dust to Dust.") And given that the Psi
  76. Corps produces the stuff, Bester may be able to arrange that.
  77. * The Shadows may also be looking for telepaths for use as
  78. hyperspace trackers; presumably they know about the scanning
  79. abilities revealed by Bester.
  80. * Is detecting other ships in hyperspace something peculiar to human
  81. telepaths? If not, do other races use telepaths for that purpose?
  82. It seems odd that the ability would remain a secret for so long if
  83. all races with telepaths can use them to scout in hyperspace. On
  84. the other hand, each race who's discovered the effect might
  85. consider it a military advantage and thus keep it under wraps.
  86. * Did Bester find out about Ivanova when she slapped him? Physical
  87. contact intensifies psi ability (established as early as [22]"The
  88. Gathering") but the slap was probably too brief to be of any use.
  89. However, he did take care to make her angry, which, as she herself
  90. has observed ([23]"Dust to Dust") makes scans much easier.
  91. * Does Ivanova's latent telepathy provide any protection against
  92. attack by a Shadow ship? Ivanova has only encountered a Shadow
  93. ship once, in [24]"Matters of Honor," and it fired at the White
  94. Star -- but it didn't _hit_ the White Star. Perhaps Sheridan was
  95. wrong about why the Shadows missed. On the other hand, given the
  96. behavior of the Shadow ship in this episode, it's unlikely the
  97. ship in the previous encounter would have pursued the White Star
  98. like it did. (See [25]jms speaks)
  99. * As the only major race without telepaths, the Narn may be in for
  100. even more bloodshed and loss; they will be unable to protect
  101. themselves from the Shadows as they were (barely) able to before.
  102. * The cybernetic implants were perhaps put in place at the Mars
  103. facility destroyed by Garibaldi and Sinclair in comic #8,
  104. [26]"Silent Enemies." If so, it implies that the Corps, or some
  105. component of it, was abetting the Shadows in their quest to make
  106. human telepaths useless as weapons. However, the presence of the
  107. unidentified aliens, both on the cargo ship and in Carolyn's
  108. flashback, strongly suggests that the operation was performed
  109. elsewhere, or without the Corps' assistance.
  110. * Carolyn's entanglement is slightly reminiscent of Draal's
  111. attachment to the Great Machine in Epsilon 3 ([27]"Voices of
  112. Authority.") When she said that telepaths prevent her from
  113. "hearing the machine," was she talking about Shadow ships, or
  114. something similar to Epsilon 3? The Machine does seem to be
  115. affected by telepathy; witness Ivanova's ability to pull extra
  116. information out of it when she was there.
  117. * What effect will Carolyn's modifications have on her unborn child,
  118. assuming the Shadows' agents allowed it to live?
  119. * The White Star can no longer be considered even remotely secret
  120. now that Bester has been allowed to wander around the bridge. Even
  121. if he truly opposes the Shadows, his primary motives might prompt
  122. him to tell others about the ship.
  123. * Bester is presumably still safely in his position at the Psi
  124. Corps; even if he's unable to get any Corps telepaths to help
  125. combat the Shadows, he'll likely be able to arrange for Franklin's
  126. underground railroad to continue its work unmolested, providing
  127. the army of light with a supply of telepaths with which to man its
  128. ships.
  129. * His discovery of the Shadows and their involvement with the Corps,
  130. though, indicates that he's not above unauthorized scans of his
  131. own people if it suits his purposes. Presumably he's very careful
  132. to only scan people he's confident won't be able to sense him; or
  133. he scans them on some other pretense and they're unable to tell
  134. that he's pulling Shadow information from their heads too.
  135. * Bester claimed he last saw Carolyn four weeks earlier, but never
  136. elaborated on what happened to her after that. Was she spirited
  137. off on official pretenses, or did the Shadows or their agents
  138. kidnap her out of the middle of a Psi Corps installation on Mars?
  139. * Bester's entrance into the army of light bears similarity to
  140. Marcus' and Sheridan's. All three vowed to fight on the side of
  141. light after a loved one was killed or taken by the Shadows.
  142. * Now that G'Kar is a full member of the war council, perhaps he'll
  143. save Garibaldi the trouble of poring slowly through the Book of
  144. G'Quan for clues and will tell the others everything his people
  145. know about the Shadows and how to defeat them.
  146. Notes
  147. * The title may be a reference to the Trail of Tears, the forced
  148. march of thousands of American Indians away from their ancestral
  149. lands onto government-apportioned reservations half a continent
  150. away.
  151. * Vorlons also dislike telepaths, according to Garibaldi in
  152. [28]"Deathwalker."
  153. * Bester quotes from Edgar Allan Poe's [29]"The Cask of
  154. Amontillado."
  155. jms speaks
  156. * Today Walter Koenig and Bill Mumy had a scene together; this
  157. (saith Bill) marks the first time a Lost in Space regular and a
  158. Star Trek regular have acted together in the same scene.
  159. * _How does Bester fit into the Shadows/Psi Corps connection?_
  160. This question will be dealt with in "Ship of Tears," around
  161. mid-season.
  162. * The Christmas hiatus ends after the 1st, so we're back at work on
  163. the 2nd shooting "Ship of Tears," with Walter Koenig returning as
  164. Bester. Expect some major revelations about Bester's background,
  165. and where his character is going.
  166. * _Was Bester's first name a reference to Alfred Bester, the writer?
  167. _
  168. Yes, it's certainly a tribute to Alfie, a giant in the field.
  169. * _Where did the prop for the book come from?_
  170. The book was made by Mark Walters of our prop department; and when
  171. all is said and done...it'll likely end up in my office....
  172. Creation hath its perks.
  173. * _Where did you put the war room set?_
  174. Since we're not using the casino much this season -- not a lot of
  175. room for frivolity -- we yanked it out and put up the war room on
  176. stage C.
  177. * _How were the reflections on Sheridan's faceplate done?_
  178. The reflections you cite were all done real-time with an LCD
  179. projector.
  180. * _Was Garibaldi's voice dubbed?_
  181. If this refers to the War Room scene with Garibaldi at the
  182. end...yes, there was some looping done. The best performed scene
  183. had some unacceptable noise in it from the chair Jerry had been
  184. sitting in at the first part, then he went slightly off-mike at
  185. the second point.
  186. * Who's behind the shadows? Nobody. The shadows are the shadows
  187. (though that's not the name by which they call themselves), a race
  188. of their own. Question is, why are they doing what they're doing?
  189. You'll find out by season's end.
  190. * _Why did Garibaldi need a computer to read the Book of G'Quan?_
  191. To follow the book, there still has to be a knowledge of the
  192. language. You need to have a dictionary around, which is what was
  193. used.
  194. The comparison, I suppose, would be those who say that Jorge Luis
  195. Borges' work can only be most truly appreciated in the original
  196. Spanish. There's a *translated* version, which someone has gone
  197. through and made the translation for you, written it all out in
  198. English...or you can learn the language, and then read the
  199. original manuscript.
  200. Garibaldi doesn't know Narn, so how other than with a dictionary
  201. could he read the original material, except by sleeping with it
  202. under his pillow and praying for divine intervention.
  203. * _How could G'Quan and the Narn telepaths fight the Shadows if the
  204. Narn telepaths were all killed?_
  205. Those were the last remaining ones, the older telepaths, their
  206. children all killed, too old now to produce any further children,
  207. and the technology of cloning or genetics was still way beyond
  208. them.
  209. The story of the last crusade of G'Quan is actually quite
  210. interesting; I hope to get it into the show at some point. Right
  211. now it's mainly background, even though I've worked it out fully.
  212. * _How about an episode showing G'Quan's crusade?_
  213. No, because that would mean doing a story without our main
  214. characters, since G'Quan's story took place about a thousand years
  215. ago, and I don't think I could sell that. (Unless I did another
  216. time travel number, and I only intend to go to that well once,
  217. with the B4 storyline.)
  218. * _Then how about telling us the story online?_
  219. I think I'd rather hold it for now, on the chance that I can use
  220. it somewhere, or in time turn it into something larger.
  221. * That's one of the things about the show that makes it very
  222. appealing to write; you can go from fall down funny, broad comedy
  223. in "Vir" to something more emotional, almost lyrical but serious
  224. in "Avalon," then right into something vaguely horrific in "Ship."
  225. You get to use all your muscles, not just the same ones over and
  226. over. I like to stretch, try something I haven't tried before.
  227. Which means from time to time I fall on my face, but that's okay;
  228. it's the only way to learn. I have absolutely no qualms about
  229. making an ass of myself and failing if it means that the next
  230. time, I can do it right.
  231. I didn't give Mira or Andreas any instructions on that scene
  232. except what was in the script, which was minimal. When you have
  233. two performers that solid in the room, just give them the lines
  234. and run like hell.
  235. Speaking of going back and rewatching episodes...part of this goes
  236. right back to the *pilot*, where, you'll recall, G'Kar tried to
  237. seduce Lyta, mentioning that there are no Narn telepaths, and they
  238. feel very strongly it's important to their survival that they
  239. start breeding them at the first opportunity.
  240. Ding....!
  241. * _Did the lack of Narn telepaths give the Shadows an extra
  242. advantage during recent encounters?_
  243. Certainly, that there were no teeps on Narn made them easy
  244. targets, as were their ships. They would also have a vested
  245. interest in subduing them because of the knowledge they have,
  246. revealed here. If you'll remember, in "Matters of Honor," they
  247. mention to Morden that they've only been able to track down some
  248. Narn legends. Morden's reply: "Well, we've taken care of that
  249. problem." Had G'Kar not been out and about, they might have
  250. succeeded.
  251. * _Why didn't all the Narn support G'Kar's request to send an
  252. expedition to Z'ha'dum in [30]"Revelations," if G'Quon wrote about
  253. the Shadows?_
  254. Narn is somewhat factionalized itself, as is every world; there
  255. are different followers of different denominations of sometimes
  256. similar basic beliefs. Catholics and Protestants are both members
  257. of the same faith, but a Protestant doesn't recognize the power of
  258. the Pope; neither does a Mormon, or a Lutheran. Similarly, not
  259. everyone invests G'Quon with the same amount of reverence or
  260. credibility. And G'Kar can call upon those who believe similarly
  261. to send out an expedition, but may not have the clout in the rest
  262. of the government to do much more afterward.
  263. And yes, initially the shadows had no interest in the Narns, until
  264. such time as the Narns, led by G'Quon, began to engage in sabotage
  265. and direct attacks to drive them off their homeworld. Then the
  266. killing started.
  267. * Minbari telepaths can also have an effect, as we'll see soon.
  268. * _Bester's line about being the only thing standing between
  269. humanity and the abyss in [31]"Dust to Dust" wasn't as arrogant as
  270. it sounded._
  271. Yeah...we're slippery that way....
  272. * Everybody's agendas remain the same...but for the moment, they are
  273. on the same alignment. As soon as it's over, as Ivanova says,
  274. he'll turn on them, no mistake. Enlightened self-interest, nothing
  275. more.
  276. The new command center was cobbled from what's on the station,
  277. with some additional Minbari funding. And yes, by now, pretty much
  278. the whole crew knows what's at stake with the shadows. And now
  279. that they're not hiding anymore, the whole *thing* is out in the
  280. open.
  281. * _Was the cargo ship's pilot the same species as the surgeons?_
  282. Yep. Same species.
  283. * There's no relation between the aliens working for the shadows and
  284. the Streib. The ones you saw in the flash were "doctors" of a sort
  285. doing the work; there was no abduction required except of course
  286. the covert kidnapping from the Psi Corps Re-education Center. As
  287. for Bester's look behind, he was just looking to the guards behind
  288. him, and the ones in front of him.
  289. * The implants are part of the preparation process Delenn referred
  290. to in "Messages."
  291. * _Did Bester read Ivanova when she slapped him?_
  292. I think the contact would've been too fleeting, and too much a
  293. shock (and it likely hurt like the dickens) that by the time he
  294. knew it was there, it was too late, and she would've sensed it in
  295. either event.
  296. * "Was it just me, or did anyone stop to think just how Bester got
  297. to B-5 space in a Starfury without using the local jumpgate. Who
  298. brought him and more important, why?"
  299. He simply tagged along with an Earthforce jump-capable ship, and
  300. asked to be dropped off. I considered bringing this up, but it was
  301. just dead exposition; it would be easy enough to do.
  302. * _Why didn't B5's sensors pick up the jump point when he was
  303. dropped off?_
  304. It's far enough outside B5...about an hour or so in normal
  305. space...that they wouldn't have picked it up.
  306. * _Why didn't Bester stay with Carolyn?_
  307. Logically, he can't just go away indefinitely, and it's going to
  308. take a long time before they can get Carolyn in shape. A very long
  309. time. If he stays, he'd be noticed and hunted down by the Corps,
  310. which ends his usefulness. His staying served no purpose.
  311. * It'll be a long time before Bester's ladyfriend comes anywhere
  312. near being whole again.
  313. * _Will Bester covertly help B5?_
  314. Yes, that'll be something Bester will do now.
  315. * _Was this change of heart planned from the start?_
  316. Yes, this was definitely intended from the start with Bester.
  317. * "If the theme of the relationship is "All Bester needed was to
  318. love and be loved, or he wouldn't have been the slimeball he is
  319. today", I will be a bit disappointed."
  320. Then you won't be.
  321. "It's just a little too simplistic."
  322. Absolutely.
  323. One mongoose can love another; that won't change its attitude
  324. toward pythons.
  325. * _Bester's connection to Carolyn was too much of a coincidence. It
  326. would have worked better if they'd brought him a list of names and
  327. he'd seen her there._
  328. Yeah, they could've brought him a list...and he'd have seen the
  329. name instantly, and wouldn't have been hit with his own "blip"
  330. careless attitude right in his face...also, she needed to be
  331. already being defrosted at that point, and you can't defrost all
  332. of them at once.
  333. Yeah, it was a coincidence. Synchronicity. It happens. It doesn't
  334. happen much on this show, hardly ever. I figured she'd be one of
  335. the last in, and thus the first out. Synchronicity and
  336. coincidences *do* happen. How many times have you reached for the
  337. phone to call someone to find the phone ringing, and it's them on
  338. the other end? What're the odds of Oedipus killing his father and
  339. marrying his mother out of all the possible kingdoms in the area?
  340. It happens. As long as it doesn't happen to excess, it's not
  341. something I'm worried about.
  342. * "Then out of the hundred popcycles in the Shadow transport, we
  343. just happen to pick the one guiding light in Bester's life. God,
  344. aren't we lucky."
  345. Yes, and how amazingly coincidental that of all the women around,
  346. Oedipus would just happen to murder his father and marry his
  347. mother without knowing he had done so. Okay, it was a coincidence,
  348. I'll own up to that. We have very, very few of them on the show.
  349. And the reason the word "coincidence" exists, and the word
  350. "synchronicity," is that sometimes stuff like that does happen.
  351. You ever pick up the phone to call somebody and have that person
  352. already on the line calling you? You ever think of someone you
  353. haven't seen in a while and run into them the next day? It
  354. happens. As long as it doesn't happen to excess, and become a
  355. venue for sloppy storytelling every week, it doesn't bother me,
  356. it's a legitimate plot device.
  357. And you misspelled popcicle.
  358. * There are a number of medlabs, which are broken into various
  359. areas; each has a larger wing attached to it, which we've seen on
  360. occasion, such as when the young girl in "Legacies" is in the
  361. infirmary in bed, same with Shon in "Believers." They each have a
  362. pretty fair capacity for patients.
  363. * _Why aren't other TV networks available? What happened to the two
  364. reporters at the ISN desk when it was shut down?_
  365. ISN is one of the only interstellar networks bounced via the
  366. tachyon relay systems from Earth to the outer colonies and beyond.
  367. There are lots of other channels back home, but to get this far
  368. out you need the support of the government.
  369. The other two reporters are, to say the least, in deep guano.
  370. * That's Brakiri space they attacked; more on that in the next
  371. episode. (They're a League world.)
  372. * Ivanova isn't a strong enough teep for the incoming shadow vessel
  373. to really even notice.
  374. * _How close does a telepath need to be to read someone?_
  375. The person has to be in their line of sight; they don't have to
  376. look into the person's eyes or anything as silly as that. It
  377. doesn't matter if the person's head or body are covered, as long
  378. as there's a definite "focus" for them.
  379. * If the person is behind a door, or otherwise can't be located
  380. visually, it's difficult to impossible to scan.
