  17. Backplot
  18. * Ivanova has been in the military for 13 years.
  19. * The Centauri are attempting to pacify the Narn homeworld's
  20. population. Among other techniques, they send troops to Narn
  21. villages to root out aggressive citizens and "put them to sleep."
  22. Sometimes entire villages are found to be aggressive and are
  23. burned to the ground.
  24. * Vir, using his power as head of the diplomatic office on Minbar,
  25. has been running a Schindleresque underground railroad for Narns.
  26. He created a fake persona in the Centauri government, "Abrahamo
  27. Linconi," and faked death certificates for over two thousand Narn
  28. after "Linconi" ordered them transferred to work camps on Centauri
  29. Prime.
  30. * The Centauri consider marriage for the sake of love rather than
  31. politics a radical act.
  32. * Vir's uncle doesn't think highly of him, claiming that Vir is
  33. capable of "a well-deserved humility."
  34. * Vir has an interest in human history.
  35. Unanswered Questions
  36. * How was Ivanova able to flesh out Vir's fake official, whose
  37. records were presumably in the Centauri Republic's private
  38. databases?
  39. * What did Vir and Lyndisty do with the bound Narn? Obviously Vir
  40. didn't kill him, but what did he tell Lyndisty?
  41. * Will Lyndisty's family cancel the arrangements now that Vir has
  42. been demoted?
  43. * Does G'Kar know of Vir's efforts? Will he be able to forgive Vir
  44. in spite of himself ([18]"Comes the Inquisitor?")
  45. Analysis
  46. * If Ivanova and Allen could follow the paper trail to discover that
  47. Vir apparently sent thousands of Narn to their deaths, others
  48. might be able to as well. Vir may find himself a target if any
  49. Narn who aren't in on his secret manage to access the records in
  50. question. Certainly Lyndisty is still in danger; lots of other
  51. Narn would undoubtedly like to get their hands on someone with her
  52. history.
  53. * Vir can still help the Narn if he chooses, though it'll be
  54. riskier. He presumably has retained his post as Londo's attache,
  55. which should have some authority in itself. And by tempering
  56. Londo, however slightly, he may do more good than he did on
  57. Minbar.
  58. * Vir isn't alone in wanting to help the Narn; he referred to others
  59. working with him. Will those others be able to continue,
  60. especially with Ivanova's assistance? The presence of other
  61. Centauri might explain how she was able to access the Centauri
  62. government's files.
  63. * Given Londo's feelings about bugs, what will his reaction be when
  64. he sees an arachnoid Shadow warship for the first time? Perhaps
  65. his fear of insects (and spiders) stems in part from his dream
  66. ([19]"Matters of Honor.")
  67. * There may also be a parallel between Londo's insect hunt and the
  68. typical Centauri attitude toward the Narn, who they regard as
  69. little more than bugs on two feet. If that parallel is
  70. intentional, Londo's line about the insects "evolving before my
  71. eyes" might have some relation to the Narns' changing position in
  72. the universe -- with G'Kar's help (and some prodding from Kosh)
  73. they're becoming something quite different than they were mere
  74. months earlier.
  75. * Evidence of the pressures of independence are starting to appear:
  76. B5's officers now drink an unidentified liquid instead of morning
  77. coffee and the ambassador of a major race -- albeit an ally of the
  78. government the station opposes -- can't get a maintenance crew to
  79. his quarters. The loss of Earth funding and support is likely to
  80. grow worse over time.
  81. * Vir's smuggled Narn are considered dead by the Centauri -- perhaps
  82. making one of them the subject of Lady Morella's prophecy to
  83. Londo, that he "must not kill the one who is already dead"
  84. ([20]"Point of No Return.")
  85. Notes
  86. * The title is something of a pun; it's Latin for "thus passes the
  87. man" (roughly speaking.) It's probably a reference to the saying
  88. "sic transit gloria mundi" ("thus passes the glory of the world.")
  89. jms speaks
  90. * _Why are the command crew still wearing their old uniforms in the
  91. opening credits?_
  92. Because changing one picture, or a credit caption, is a *heck* of
  93. a lot simpler than changing 4 pictures and redoing the whole
  94. thing.
  95. * _Why were this episode and [21]"A Late Delivery From Avalon"
  96. swapped?_
  97. We flipped them around because after "Ceremonies" we NEED
  98. something lighter, and because York's episode in the new slot now
  99. coincides with the first week of sweeps. They were written to play
  100. in either order.
  101. * _Can you tell us more about Vir's family?_
  102. I can, but I'd rather show it; you'll find out a lot more about
  103. Vir and family relations in "Sic Transit Vir" in mid-april.
  104. * _About the title_
  105. thus passes Vir (it's a signal of transition)
  106. * Re: "...a Vir intensive script."
  107. Just finished one. Script for episode #13, "Sic Transit Vir." I
  108. think it's gonna be a hoot.
  109. * Yes, it's sort of a double pun in that respect...thus passes the
  110. man, which can have many meanings, also entering manhood, or
  111. dying, or going away, or the more Vir transitioning, or
  112. going...lots of variations.
  113. * It's accurate as far as it goes, and a pun on another level.
  114. * Just an advisory...I finally saw the trailer for "Sic Transit
  115. Vir," and I'd suggest anyone who wants to enjoy the show *not*
  116. watch the trailer, as it gives away stuff that shouldn't be given
  117. away.
  118. _[Spoiler for "The Maltese Falcon"]_
  119. I.e., if the trailer for The Maltese Falcon said, "...and see the
  120. surprise when the black bird is discovered to be an imitation."
  121. * _[Spoiler for "Citizen Kane"]_
  122. I wasn't happy with that aspect of the promo either (which was the
  123. national spot, not cut by the stations). It's kinda like doing a
  124. promo for Citizen Kane, "...it all began with a child's sled named
  125. Rosebud...."
  126. * _About Vir_
  127. He's a much stronger character than anyone might think. He's sort
  128. of the "God's Fool" character, to get literary for a second, who
  129. somehow manages to make it through it all.
  130. * At this point, with the rethinking going on back home, he's
  131. bethrothed and promised, the marriage arranged, but not yet fully,
  132. *formally* married. There's still ritual to go through. The other
  133. family could still choose to withdraw the arrangement.
  134. * Even the babble is pretty tightly scripted. The hesitations and
  135. occasional stumble-restatements are the actor's delivery. There's
  136. occasionally a very tiny bit of improv in that kind of scene, but
  137. very little.
  138. * Londo is a very sharp, cunning character. He does what he does for
  139. sheer patriotism, to serve his people. *Whatever* that may entail.
  140. And Vir gets whipsawed a lot...he's a great character, with a wide
  141. range of characteristics I can play with, from comic to tragic.
  142. * When Londo goes to Delenn earlier this season to ask about having
  143. Vir appointed to the Centauri diplomatic mission, he mentions then
  144. that the mission has been closed for some time, "some trouble I
  145. believe with our previous liaison." This just paid that off; those
  146. Minbari are just a darned bad influence, I guess.
  147. * _What happened to the previous liaison?_
  148. Went native. Bought into the whole Minbari theological system,
  149. dropped his Centauri citizenship, was last heard of in a distant
  150. retreat trying to grow a bone.
  151. * _What happened to the Narn? And what were the Narns doing in Vir's
  152. room?_
  153. I could've *sworn* there was a line there about the Narn
  154. recovering; I'm going to have to check this. I hope I didn't
  155. accidentally cut it for time while doing something else. (It was a
  156. LONG editing session.)
  157. I figured the Narns were there to discuss the fates of their
  158. families back home, but yeah, to a certain degree it was there as
  159. a great end for the teaser.
  160. * _Was the door to Vir's room computer-generated?_
  161. The door was quite real.
  162. * _Who said the line that was cut?_
  163. It was in the observation dome scene with Ivanova; I realized that
  164. we'd cut a small piece for time that was expendable, but in the
  165. back and forth went one line too far without realizing it.
  166. Sigh....
  167. * _What was the line?_
  168. The only line was that "the Narn is recovering in Medlab,"
  169. something to that effect. Sigh....
  170. * Basically, after seeing what he's done for the Narns, and knowing
  171. who Vir is all this time, and seeing his reaction of horror to
  172. what Lyndisty was suggesting, anybody who thinks he offed the Narn
  173. isn't paying attention.
  174. * _Did the Centauri politician know Vir's secret?_
  175. No, he didn't know, and would've been horrified if he had.
  176. * _About different Centauri speaking with different accents_
  177. We've just always assumed that not everyone on any given planet is
  178. going to speak with the same accent as everybody else from that
  179. planet. Seems more realistic.
  180. Certainly, among Centauri, a certain accent is more associated
  181. with the "old school" of court nobility and the like.
  182. * "Did Sheridan and Ivanova really think that Vir was killing off
  183. thousands of Narn while he was on Minbar. Hey, this is Vir, not
  184. Josef Mengele we are talking about. Did they really think it was
  185. necessary to drag this all out in front of Londo instead of
  186. privately."
  187. No, they didn't think he was doing it personally, only that he was
  188. expediting the transfer of Narns offworld for this purpose. You
  189. think someone like Vir could not do this. But most of the Nazis
  190. who send Jews to die weren't Josef Mengele, carving into
  191. bodies...they processed numbers from behind wire-framed glasses,
  192. and were quiet, sometimes even cheerful individuals with wonderful
  193. wives and children. The greatest evil can often wear a benign,
  194. smiling, affable face. And remember, people can change on this
  195. show. You look at Londo in season one, is this someone you could
  196. buy taking part in the bombing of the Narn homeworld and the death
  197. of millions of Narns? Yet that's what happened. And their belief
  198. was that it was probably Londo who was behind it all...it's Londo
  199. to whom Ivanova expressed her outrage, not Vir, who she figured
  200. was probably being pushed into it at his behest, so logically she
  201. *would* take this right to Londo. She figured, as you did, that
  202. Vir certainly wouldn't think of this on his own, but Londo could
  203. (and says so in the episode).
  204. * "Londo is a hell of a leader."
  205. Perfect fodder for an Emperor, no...?
  206. * I love the Ivanova/Vir scenes; I fall down laughing every time.
  207. "the wife is always right." Hmm...I must convey this to Ivanova
  208. for her reaction the next time she pops out of my subconscious.
  209. * _What was the saucer-shaped ship outside the station?_
  210. It's a Vree ship, which we've seen before.
  211. * _About the patches on the sleeves of the new uniforms_
  212. One of the patches is a Ranger patch; the other is the new B5
  213. sword and shield logo.
  214. * It's been established that Minbari can and do lie when it's done
  215. to save the honor of another. Here, Delenn saved face for Sheridan
  216. at dinner.
  217. * _When will Delenn and Sheridan kiss?_
  218. Me? A tease? Moi? I just report the news, I don't make it.
  219. The kiss is coming. But I wanted to do it in such a way that it
  220. somewhat unexpected, in a way that would have even more weight
  221. than under any other possible conditions. How do you turn a kiss
  222. into a wham? (Aside from kissing the right person, natch.) Stay
  223. tuned....
  224. * Londo and the bugs had nothing to do with any notions about the
  225. Shadows.
  226. Sheridan is a war historian, with his main interests in the civil
  227. war, where one of his ancestors fought. He's very big on Lincoln.
