  19. Backplot
  20. * A little over a thousand years ago, long before the Narn achieved
  21. spaceflight, the Shadows set up a base on one of the Narn
  22. homeworld's southern continents.
  23. * Morden is involved with the Psi Corps and some part of the Earth
  24. government. The Corps knows about the Shadows. Morden has also
  25. been in contact with Lord Refa without Londo's knowledge.
  26. * If Delenn is correct about Morden always having Shadow companions,
  27. then the Psi Corps, at least, presumably knows about the Shadows.
  28. Talia, in [19]"In the Shadow of Z'ha'dum," was able -- or even
  29. forced -- to sense the Shadows when she passed Morden in the hall;
  30. presumably a Psi Cop would easily be able to do the same. (Unless,
  31. of course, Talia's perception was a result of Ironheart's gift
  32. from [20]"Mind War.")
  33. * The Shadows aren't particularly interested in the section of the
  34. galaxy containing the Centauri Republic; what they're after (or
  35. rather, what they claim to be after) is on the other side.
  36. * What they _are_ interested in, though, is the Rangers --
  37. interested enough to have Morden go over Londo's head and get Refa
  38. to give them a world known to house a Ranger training camp.
  39. * The Markab homeworld has been looted by scavengers since the race
  40. became extinct ([21]"Confessions and Lamentations.")
  41. * The Minbari religious caste, without the knowledge of some members
  42. of the Grey Council, have built a new ship using Minbari and
  43. Vorlon technology. Called the White Star, it has been granted to
  44. Sheridan for use against the Shadows.
  45. * The fleet of Shadow ships in Londo's dream ([22]"The Coming of
  46. Shadows") are flying over Centauri Prime, as far as Londo can
  47. tell.
  48. * Being seen by many people is a strain on Kosh.
  49. Unanswered Questions
  50. * What other details of Londo's dream weren't shown in [23]"The
  51. Coming of Shadows?"
  52. * What in particular are the Shadows after, that they don't care
  53. what the Centauri do with a good 30% of the galaxy? What's in the
  54. remaining section? (For example, where are the major races in
  55. relation to the boundary Morden drew?)
  56. * How did Marcus leave Medlab? Is he able to put himself into a
  57. trance deep enough to pass unnoticed in an admittedly cursory
  58. medical examination?
  59. * What do the Shadows know about the Rangers?
  60. * How did Ivanova find out about the Rangers?
  61. * What is the "program" referred to by the Psi Cop?
  62. * Why are some on Earth working with the Shadows? What do they hope
  63. to gain from the association, and how does that tie in with
  64. whatever the Shadows want?
  65. * Will Endawi's report ever make it to real strategic analysts? Did
  66. G'Kar tell him about Z'ha'dum?
  67. * What else can the White Star do?
  68. * Was the Shadow vessel actually destroyed, or did it manage to
  69. escape? If it was destroyed, did it have a chance to relay
  70. information about the White Star first? (see [24]jms speaks)
  71. Analysis
  72. * Lennier says, "Not all of my people are comfortable with the idea
  73. of the Rangers." That implies that the Rangers aren't as secret an
  74. organization on the Minbari homeworld as they are elsewhere.
  75. * Likewise, the fact that Marcus' brother was able to sign up for
  76. the Rangers, and that Marcus apparently knew about them too at the
  77. time, suggests that they're operating at least somewhat in the
  78. open. That might also explain how Ivanova and the Shadows found
  79. out about them. The fact that the Drazi government apparently knew
  80. about the Ranger training base is further evidence.
  81. * Londo severing his ties with Morden may have little impact on the
  82. Shadows' association with the Centauri; Morden may continue to
  83. meet with Refa, rendering Londo's newly prominent position among
  84. the Centauri obsolete.
  85. * Shadow ships are actually entering and leaving hyperspace when
  86. they shimmer in and out of sight; they aren't just becoming
  87. invisible. Obviously they know a good deal more about hyperspace
  88. than most of the other races (also evidenced by the jump-point
  89. weapon they used in [25]"The Long, Twilight Struggle.") It's
  90. interesting to note that another ancient race, the walkers at
  91. Sigma 957 ([26]"Mind War") also had an atypical way of entering
  92. hyperspace -- assuming that's what they were doing in that
  93. episode.
  94. * Perhaps the fact that Kosh feels he must maintain his illusory
  95. appearance when out of his encounter suit, and the fact that doing
  96. so is a strain on him, is another reason he wears the suit in the
  97. first place. If it weren't a strain to be seen by many people,
  98. perhaps he would be willing to walk around the station in full
  99. view. (Probably not, though; otherwise he'd most likely have been
  100. more willing to show himself in the confines of his quarters.)
  101. * Was the White Star constructed with Sheridan in mind? Giving it
  102. that name seems certain to stir up resentment among the warrior
  103. caste when they find out about it, especially if it turns out that
  104. the man they call Starkiller was the intended commander from the
  105. start. (Sheridan destroyed the Minbari cruiser Black Star in the
  106. Earth-Minbari War.)
  107. * The White Star has some obvious Minbari characteristics, not the
  108. least of which are the distinctive spade-shaped fins at the rear
  109. (also visible on Minbari flyers and battle cruisers.) If the
  110. Shadows are at all familiar with Minbari ships, they probably
  111. won't be fooled by the White Star for long.
  112. * Either the Minbari and Vorlons have mastered the art of intuitive
  113. user interfaces, or Ivanova is an extremely quick study; she was
  114. operating the White Star's weapons systems, presumably not a
  115. trivial task, with at most a few hours of training. Perhaps the
  116. controls are partially telepathic in nature.
  117. * The Shadows are aware of the fact that some Narn (if only G'Kar)
  118. know about them; they don't seem to consider it significant,
  119. especially now that the Narn have been beaten into submission.
  120. * The Shadows are even willing to be heard in public; they're
  121. plainly audible telling Morden to set up a second meeting with
  122. Londo (assuming that's what they're saying.)
  123. * Was the Shadow base on Narn a unique thing, or did they have bases
  124. on other races' worlds as well? In [27]"The Long Dark," the Markab
  125. ambassador claimed to have heard the same stories of an ancient
  126. enemy that G'Kar was recounting. Perhaps the Shadows had a base on
  127. the Markab homeworld as well -- and if so, perhaps they unleashed
  128. the plague ([28]"Confessions and Lamentations") in order to
  129. reacquire that base without anyone noticing. If that's the case,
  130. Sheridan may have inadvertently helped the Shadows out by
  131. destroying the Markab jumpgate; that'll make it harder for someone
  132. to stumble on the base by accident.
  133. * Is the former Shadow presence on Narn related to the fact that
  134. there are no Narn telepaths? ([29]"The Gathering") Given how
  135. unpleasant -- even painful -- being near the Shadows was for Talia
  136. ([30]"In the Shadow of Z'ha'dum") perhaps prolonged exposure to
  137. the Shadows caused so much trouble for Narn telepaths that they
  138. didn't survive to breed new generations of telepaths.
  139. * Morden has had contact with the Centauri and with Earth. Has he
  140. also been talking to other races? The Minbari warrior caste, for
  141. instance?
  142. * When Londo asks for assurances that the Shadows won't bother the
  143. Centauri, Morden says dismissively, "You and I both know what
  144. treaties are worth." This could be a reference to the Centauri's
  145. disregard for the treaties against mass drivers ([31]"The Long,
  146. Twilight Struggle") -- but there's another, more recent, treaty
  147. that could also be the one in question, namely the pact with
  148. Earth.
  149. * Sheridan has now destroyed two indestructible enemy vessels in his
  150. career.
  151. * Marcus claims his brother was killed in a Shadow attack on a
  152. mining colony. Which colony was that? Was Marcus working on a Narn
  153. mining colony, or have the Shadows been attacking other targets as
  154. well?
  155. * Marcus' reason for joining the Rangers is similar to Ivanova's
  156. reason for joining Earthforce ([32]"And Now For a Word.") Both of
  157. them joined after losing a brother in a war.
  158. * Sheridan orders the White Star's aft jump engines online. If this
  159. can be taken to mean that it has two (or more) sets of jump
  160. engines, it may be that the White Star can duplicate the
  161. Shadow-killing explosion without the aid of a jump gate by using
  162. both its jump engines at the same time. On the other hand, it may
  163. be that there's only enough power to run one set of engines at a
  164. time, or that there's something about jumpgates, rather than jump
  165. points, that causes the effect. (The closed caption quotes him as
  166. saying "Half jump engines.")
  167. * The Centauri automated defense systems appear to be able to track
  168. the White Star, evidence that Centauri weapons technology is more
  169. advanced than Earth's ([33]"Points of Departure.")
  170. * Endawi says that Earth pulled the Shadow footage off ISN shortly
  171. after it first aired. In what sense? Did they just record it from
  172. ISN, or did they force ISN to stop airing the report?
  173. * In the conference room, after Endawi leaves, Delenn tells Sheridan
  174. that she has never seen such a ship, that only descriptions of the
  175. ships have been passed down from the last war. Presumably, if the
  176. Minbari were involved in the last war against the shadows, they
  177. were capable of spaceflight (recall: the Narn, who were not
  178. capable of spaceflight, were ignored in the last war.) That they
  179. should have no recorded images of the shadow ships from that
  180. conflict seems odd, since recording technology would clearly have
  181. been within their grasp. Possibilities:
  182. 1. Someone, or something, quietly eradicated whatever images did
  183. exist at some point in the past. We have certainly seen the
  184. Shadows act through their agents to suppress information
  185. regarding their past activities (i.e. the Narn being beaten
  186. down.) No one said all the "information suppression" had to
  187. be as spectacular as a planetary conquest. This of course
  188. begs the question, "Who are the agents?"
  189. 2. The last shadow war was so devastating that all recorded
  190. images were lost.
  191. 3. Delenn was lying. (There doesn't seem to be a good reason for
  192. her to do so, though.)
  193. Notes
  194. * A small effects glitch is visible in the opening shot. As the
  195. camera pans down from the repair crew, look at the stationary ring
  196. around the front of the station. At about the eight o'clock
  197. position, there's a small shaded area, the bottom half of which
  198. flickers on and off.
  199. * When Endawi leaves the conference room after meeting with
  200. Sheridan, Delenn, and Ivanova, he forgets to take his data crystal
  201. with him. It is left in the viewer. He does in fact remove it when
  202. visiting Londo. Presumably, since it was pulled just after airing
  203. on ISN, he would not want to leave copies lying around.
  204. * This episode has Delenn's first action scene of the series.
  205. * Alcohol's effect on Minbari was first noted by Lennier in [34]"The
  206. Quality of Mercy." It causes paranoia and homicidal rages.
  207. jms speaks
  208. * _July 23, 1995:_ Finally, one week from tomorrow, we start filming
  209. on year three, with episode #301, "Matters of Honor," which also
  210. introduces a new recurring character named Marcus.
  211. * Actually, the lead guest character in the first episode of year
  212. three, one Mr. Endawi, is a Nigerian, and our new recurring
  213. character, Marcus Cole (a Ranger) is British, and played by Jason
  214. Carter. So you have two non-American accents occupying major parts
  215. of the first ep next year.
  216. * New sets: yes, and we're creating situations in which we can see
  217. more of Earth, Mars, our other local planets, plus Narn, Centauri,
  218. Minbari and one other major world. As the Shadow War cranks into
  219. gear, you're going to need a place to meet in security and plan
  220. for it, so we're also building that. We'll see more of Draal's
  221. place on Epsilon 3. And there's one other major set that we'll see
  222. in the first episode, and quite a bit thereafter.
  223. New characters: well, there's Marcus Cole, a Ranger assigned
  224. permanently to Babylon 5, played by British actor Jason Carter;
  225. we'll see Lyta Alexander more this year; and Theo...what can I say
  226. about Theo...well, perhaps better to let you see for yourself.
  227. * It's predictable that I'd put someone into the show with who's a
  228. guy with thick, long hair...since every time I look in the mirror
  229. I realize more and more that where I'm concerned, thick, long hair
  230. will always be an unattainable, science fiction concept....
  231. * _About the title sequence_
  232. "Why are starfuries firing on starfuries?"
  233. Noticed that, eh?
  234. Wait and see.
  235. * _Any significance to some characters' heads turning in the opening
  236. credits?_
  237. No, I don't think even I could ever manage to be that obscure.
  238. * Overall, I'm very happy with how this season's main title sequence
  239. came out.
  240. * _Why aren't there many scenes from season three in the title
  241. sequence?_
  242. Because we have to make the season 3 title sequence *very* early
  243. in the shooting process; we need shots to go out in the first
  244. episode title sequence, but we've only shot a few episodes by the
  245. time we need to deliver. So most shots tend to come from the
  246. preceding season.
  247. * We had considered refurbishing C&C, but didn't get around to it
  248. this season.
  249. * _Will the station still be damaged?_
  250. Repairs will be visible being done in the first episode.
  251. * When the fighting staff expanded, it was CGI; physical otherwise.
  252. * _What was that noise after Morden and Londo spoke?_
  253. No, you heard something, all right...just a little bit of shadow
  254. whisper for those who got it; those who don't, won't notice.
  255. * _Are Morden and his "associates" equal partners?_
  256. Well, he may sometimes *think* of his associates as equals...and
  257. my cat thinks he actually owns this house....
  258. * _Delenn lied! A continuity glitch?_
  259. Re: Minbari lying...it has been established, repeatedly, that the
  260. Minbari do lie *when it means saving someone else's honor*. That
  261. was even stated, openly, in the very same episode about Sheridan's
  262. frame job, "There All The Honor Lies." Londo says, right there,
  263. that the Minbari will lie for a greater cause, another's honor.
  264. The same was done in "The Quality of Mercy." Delenn fibbed about
  265. the ship in "Matters" because in so doing, she saved Sheridan's
  266. honor.
  267. This is not a plot hole, it's been established clearly in the
  268. series on multiple occasions. We have never, ever, at any time
  269. said conclusively that Minbari never, ever lie. This is another
  270. example of certain persons simply not paying attention, and then
  271. blaming the show for their own lack of continuity in attention.
  272. * Yes, Endawi is more or less a good guy, in that he's totally
  273. uninvolved with Morden or anyone on that side. He was doing what
  274. he said he'd been assigned to do.
  275. * _Was that Bester in the senator's office?_
  276. No, it wasn't Bester at the Senator's office.
  277. * _Any reason why it wasn't?_
  278. Yes.
  279. * _Was the Shadow ship destroyed?_
  280. Be of good cheer; the jumpgate blast destroyed the pursuing
  281. vessel.
  282. * It's two separate mechanisms; no one has been able to open a jump
  283. point in a jump point because of the hideous amount of energy
  284. needed by the ship in question. They used the White Star to open a
  285. jump point within a standing *jump gate* that was already there,
  286. and had a secondary source of power. The competing energies were
  287. impossible to control, and blew the whole thing.
  288. * I don't consider the "bonehead maneuver" to be technobabble, for
  289. several reasons. For starters, the "babble" part isn't there; TB
  290. goes on into long explanations of neutrino waves and particle
  291. theory and elements that have to be recalibrated, on and on and
  292. on....
  293. Second, a prime requisite for TB is that it's a technology that
  294. comes out of nowhere, artifically invented to create a problem
  295. and/or create a solution. Neither applies here; we've seen jump
  296. gates and jump points now for three years; we've seen them
  297. disrupted in "The Long Twilight Struggle." It was just using the
  298. tech we've already established.
  299. In a way, it's kind of unfair that we get hammered when we use a
  300. little teeny piece of technology because ST has abused it for so
  301. many years. That's not our fault, and one shouldn't develop a
  302. kneejerk response so that ANY reference to technology becomes
  303. technobabble. If that's the case, then the term becomes
  304. meaningless.
  305. This is, also, a *science* fiction show; if sometimes we have a
  306. touch of science, it's the nature of the show; you can't have SF
  307. without at least some measure of tech...otherwise you've got
  308. fantasy. The day we do a page and a half of discussions about
  309. particles being recalibrated, particles that didn't exist twenty
  310. minutes before the need became apparent, *then* we can get gigged
  311. on technobabble.
  312. * The more people who have to *see* Kosh as one of their own, the
  313. greater the strain on Kosh, as you'll note in the first ep of year
  314. three.
  315. * Where Delenn gets all those wardrobe changes is one of those
  316. questions that, in a real world, doesn't warrant close scrutiny.
  317. And yes, her costumes tend to be emblematic of where the character
  318. is, and who she is. Consequently, there will be some year three
  319. additions to underscore her more assertive nature; there's a green
  320. costume in particular that shows up in the first episode that's
  321. just *killer*.
  322. * _Was Delenn's bone crest changed?_
  323. Yeah, we made some small modifications to the headpiece (good
  324. call, Corun). It merges more seamlessly behind, it's raised
  325. slightly at the crest, and the ends blend more smoothly into the
  326. skin in front, to make the whole thing more natural.
  327. * _Will we ever see alcohol's effect on the Minbari?_
  328. No immediate plans for this, but knowing how my brain works, we'll
  329. probably see this sooner or later.
  330. * _What was the plant pictured in G'Kar's book?_
  331. The leaf shown is the G'Quon-eth, the plant featured in "By Any
  332. Means Necessary."
  333. * Had a Minbari been running that sensor, he would've nailed it
  334. instantly; but Ivanova had never actually encountered that ship
  335. before, and was running off the initial scan reports. (Also it was
  336. just phasing in at that point.)
  337. The White Star uses local drive engines based on magnetic and
  338. gravitational principles; in a sense, it doesn't so much push
  339. itself toward other worlds as *pull* itself or *repel* itself. One
  340. side effect of creating a powerful gravitational system is the
  341. ability to create artificial gravity.
  342. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
  343. * The Minbari built the White Star, borrowing some Vorlon tech, so
  344. it's primarily Minbari, and built with their sensibilities, all
  345. the controls are in Minbari, and so on. They allow Sheridan to
  346. command it because Delenn said to do so, and in battle an
  347. unpredictable human might have options that a more regimented
  348. Minbari might not.
  349. * The White Star was always in the plans for the series; it's an
  350. outgrowth of everything that has gone before. We've seen big
  351. warships, dreadnoughts, smaller ships, and personal fighters. This
  352. fits right in. If you're going to have a war over a long distance,
  353. you kinda need something to get in and out with.
  354. * _Shouldn't they have taken the White Star on a test flight? Why
  355. aren't they preparing for conflict with the Shadows?_
  356. Yeah, but it's very hard to do a story about preparation in the
  357. sense you suggest. "Well, let's go check out the White Star."
  358. "Well...sure is a fast ship, all right...so, what're the Rangers
  359. doing? Keeping an eye on stuff? Good..good...so, what's for
  360. dinner?"
  361. Each individual episode must be *about* something, must have a
  362. story that can stand on its own, separate from the arc, while
  363. adding to it. For what it's worth, "Voices of Authority," which
  364. was originally slated to run in the first 4, *is* a preparation
  365. kind of story...it gets into how they should be gearing up for
  366. what's coming, the accumulation of allies and resources, all that.
  367. Had it run as planned as #4, this would be answered. But the sheer
  368. volume of CGI required, which was pretty hideous, put it into the
  369. #5 slot, which we thought would still be in the first block of
  370. episodes. Then we found that #4 was the cutoff point.
  371. All I can tell you is that what you're asking for is *there*,
  372. plain as can be, right in the very next batch of episodes. (Also,
  373. do bear in mind that the "shadow war" referenced in the show
  374. operates as more than just discussing the shadows themselves, but
  375. what's going on back home as well.)
  376. * No, the Drazi was not a Ranger, only a supporter/collaborator (if
  377. I can use, or misuse that term.)
  378. At this stage, the Rangers are exclusively either human or
  379. minbari.
  380. * The Ranger colony was financially supported by the Minbari; the
  381. Drazi allowed them to use one of their colony worlds as a base.
