  18. Backplot
  19. * Every five years, the Drazi people divide by random selection into
  20. two equal groups, green and purple, and fight for supremacy in a
  21. contest that lasts a full year. The group that wins is the
  22. dominant one until the next battle. Group membership isn't
  23. permanent and has no deeper meaning than the color of cloth one
  24. happens to select randomly from a container.
  25. * The only son of the Centauri Emperor recently died, leaving no
  26. clear successor to the throne. This has served to increase the
  27. scheming among the Centauri nobility. At least one group,
  28. disgusted with the decay of the Republic, intends to grab for the
  29. throne when the Emperor dies; Londo has all but pledged to support
  30. that group.
  31. Unanswered Questions
  32. * Where were the techno-mages going?
  33. * Will they return or otherwise make their influence felt?
  34. * How do they know about the upcoming conflict?
  35. * _What_ do they know about it? Are they aware of the Shadows, for
  36. instance?
  37. * What part do Londo's new partners want him to play in their
  38. machinations?
  39. * What repercussions will Ivanova's solution to the Drazi problem
  40. have?
  41. * Were the winged creatures on Londo's back significant, or just a
  42. meaningless practical joke?
  43. Analysis
  44. * Londo seems to have made up his mind about following his ambition.
  45. He appeared to be seeking the techno-mages' endorsement for his
  46. own political gain, rather than for the good of the Republic. It
  47. remains to be seen whether he'll have the willpower to follow
  48. through with his newfound assertiveness when lives are at stake,
  49. though Elric's statement about the future indicates he will.
  50. * Londo is willing to trust Vir with other people's secrets ("He can
  51. be trusted!") but not with his own (e.g., his reluctance to
  52. discuss Morden in [19]"Chrysalis.") Vir is gradually becoming more
  53. assertive, more willing to stand up to Londo. Whether this will
  54. cause Londo to respect or trust him more remains to be seen.
  55. * The two Drazi leaders were clearly only in charge of the groups on
  56. Babylon 5, as evidenced by the fact that the decision to up the
  57. stakes of the contest came from the Drazi homeworld. What happens
  58. if one group wins in one place and the other wins back home is
  59. open to debate.
  60. * Londo's reference to the techno-mages' presence at the founding of
  61. the Republic, and his recognition of the human mages, suggests
  62. that the brotherhood of techno-mages is very old, and crosses
  63. species boundaries. Perhaps they have been around long enough to
  64. have taken part in the great war recorded in the Book of G'Quan
  65. (cf. [20]"Revelations") and can see signs of the same thing
  66. starting again.
  67. * The techno-mages seem to have found some technological way to
  68. emulate the prophetic abilities of some of the Centauri, among
  69. others (cf. [21]"Signs and Portents.") Such abilities are arguably
  70. related to time travel; perhaps it is the techno-mages who supply
  71. the technology to bring Babylon 4 forward in time (cf.
  72. [22]"Babylon Squared.")
  73. * When Garibaldi was playing with his weapon, it's plausible that he
  74. was contemplating suicide. He has hit rock bottom. He has been
  75. betrayed by a trusted member of his own staff and shot in the
  76. back. The only person he really trusted (Commander Sinclair) is
  77. gone. And, he is probably feeling that he was somehow responsible
  78. for the failure to prevent the assassination of the EA President.
  79. He is a recovering alcoholic, and he has lost the woman he had
  80. fantasized about marrying. If true, this lends a different meaning
  81. to Sheridan's comment, "The universe doesn't give us points for
  82. doing the easy things."
  83. Notes
  84. * Ivanova's broken foot in this episode wasn't originally planned;
  85. Claudia Christian broke her foot, and it had to be explained in
  86. the context of the show somehow.
  87. * The end credits list Edward Conery as Devereaux (cf.
  88. [23]"Chrysalis") but he doesn't seem to actually appear in the
  89. episode anywhere. Since he did appear in the previous episode,
  90. [24]"Revelations," and wasn't listed in its credits, he may have
  91. been listed here to make up for the omission.
  92. * Elric's warning to Vir is almost verbatim from Tolkien's Lord Of
  93. the Rings, in which Gildor, an elf, tells Frodo (speaking about
  94. Gandalf,) "But it is said: Do not meddle in the affairs of
  95. wizards, for they are subtle and quick to anger."
  96. * Elric's name is from Michael Moorcock's series of fantasy novels.
  97. * When Garibaldi turns up to rescue Ivanova, there is a visual
  98. gaffe. The Drazi who starts to get up to answer the door is the
  99. one in a red-accented suit with epaulettes. When Garibaldi is
  100. admitted, it is by the other Drazi, while the one who had started
  101. to get up is guarding Ivanova.
  102. * Michael Ansara, who plays Elric, also played Kang, a Klingon, in
  103. the original Star Trek episode "Day of the Dove" and the Deep
  104. Space Nine episode "Blood Oath."
  105. jms speaks
  106. * BTW, having now edited seven episodes, and seen several finished
  107. ones, I think that of the first three, "The Geometry of Shadows"
  108. (#3) is my personal favorite. "Revelations" is certainly a biggie,
  109. a staggering chunk of the arc...but "Geometry" is just an absolute
  110. hoot, something of a breather from the intensity, and largely for
  111. fun with some undertones. If you liked "The Parliament of Dreams,"
  112. you'll probably love "Geometry."
  113. * There were *substantial* differences made between the first draft
  114. and the final, based on the fact that a lot of the physical stuff
  115. I'd written for Claudia -- getting herself out of the problem she
  116. was in with the Drazi -- had to be dumped because the actress had
  117. a broken foot. So that aspect has to be remembered. We pushed her
  118. to the limits, and I didn't want to push further.
  119. * You hit on the head *precisely*. When Garibaldi was popping the
  120. energy cap in and out of the PPG, he was on the floor, nominally
  121. in the dark, thinking of killing himself. I didn't want to play it
  122. up, didn't want to make it what the story was about...just show
  123. him doing it, over and over. And from Sheridan's face, seeing the
  124. last of this, it's clear he got it...and I thought he handled the
  125. scene *perfectly*, by his whole demeanor, but NOT talking about it
  126. except indirectly.
  127. * If I told you what the 14 words were, they wouldn't mean anything
  128. anymore.
  129. * I don't feel Sheridan was downplaying her promotion; he was
  130. sneaking it up on her to surprise her, making it more of an
  131. unexpected delight.
  132. * The idea behind the title "The Geometry of Shadows" was in a sense
  133. a metaphor for the techno-mages; geometry bespeaking the use of
  134. math and equations, the latter being generally something dark, or
  135. mysterious, or mystical.
  136. * "The Geometry of Shadows" seemed to me a good metaphor for the
  137. technomages; a mix of science with something dark and mysterious.
  138. How do you work out the geometry of something that in one sense
  139. doesn't really exist, but is a projection of something else that
  140. DOES exist? That seemed to me as good a notion of technomagic as
  141. anything else.
  142. * Be assured, Vir's position continues to be important, and he moves
  143. a bit closer to the limelight as he does so...remember, he's the
  144. one who has to watch Londo's actions like a man watching an
  145. accident in slow motion, and try to do what he can to stop it.
  146. * Sheridan wasn't talking to himself, but rather to the tech who
  147. just seconds before asked if they should let the techno-mages go.
  148. (I'd trimmed the first part of his speech which made this a little
  149. clearer, figuring it'd be evident who he was talking to. What can
  150. I say... sometimes you get the bear, sometimes the bear gets you.)
  151. * Excuse me, but has *anyone* here considered that Sheridan just
  152. might still be talking to the same tech he was speaking to not
  153. *five seconds earlier*? He wasn't talking to himself, so much, or
  154. the audience, though the push-in (the only shot we had) worked
  155. against that. He *was* talking to the tech. Honest.
  156. * The technomages are from various races and worlds; there are some
  157. who are Centauri, some who are human, even other races such as the
  158. Vree and the pak'ma'ra, though these in particular happened to be
  159. from Earth. (If they were Centauri, why would Sheridan have been
  160. interfering with their emigration?)
  161. * Re: the Drazi...yeah, they all look different in that episode. Our
  162. prosthetics folks did a great job with that, as did the actors,
  163. and I think this one should earn Optic Nerve another emmy.
  164. * And yeah, Garibaldi's "joke" was supposed to be pretty lame; we
  165. even edited it to widen the awkward pause, to make it more
  166. difficult. He's trying too hard, and his spirit isn't in it.
  167. * No, actually, the technomage symbol (all of them, actually,
  168. including the ones on the wall) are all derivations, specifically
  169. altered, of old runes and the like. In some cases, we removed
  170. words and inserted mathematical symbols. The fiery symbol is all
  171. one piece, and is also an old rune.
  172. * Actually, Londo has two coats, a cloak, several different colored
  173. vests (blue, black, others), often wears just his shirt, we've
  174. seen him in his PJs...he's got a fairly large wardrobe.
  175. * Also, Londo looks for the blessings of the technomages the same
  176. way the witches performed that role in "Macbeth." There are other
  177. parallels one might draw as well, though again they're still two
  178. different stories.
  179. * _What happened to the Emperor's son?_
  180. Ah...a very sad case, that. Turhan's only child, his son, died
  181. during a boating accident, of all things. He drowned. His personal
  182. guard, who was apparently unable to find Turhan's son in the murky
  183. water, was found dead several days after making his report; his
  184. own death was officially ruled a suicide, out of grief. But there
  185. are always stories....
  186. * _How was it written before Claudia Christian injured her ankle?_
  187. Mainly it was written with Ivanova solving her problem on her own,
  188. without Garibaldi being there.
  189. * _Re: Squaring the account of Ivanova's promotion with Comic #1,
  190. "In Darkness Find Me"_
  191. The president spoke truthfully; Sheridan could petition for a
  192. promotion for her, but it's up to Earthforce to grant it, so the
  193. line still tracks. (Note also there's no pronoun there; "Giving
  194. her a field promotion." The imperial We still stands, though.)
  195. Also, Sheridan says he put through the paperwork the day after he
  196. got there; which is fairly close to the time frame in the story in
  197. which the President says they'll be giving Ivanova a promotion.
  198. There's no discontinuity here.
  199. * Actually, originally, the plan was for President Clark to indeed
  200. notify Ivanova in "Points of Departure," but introducing a new
  201. character in the General added some changes when we shot the
  202. scene. But by then it was too late to modify the comic [#1, "In
  203. Darkness Find Me"].
  204. Also, in the comic, Clark doesn't *specify* who's giving Ivanova
  205. the promotion, just that it's being done. (And Sheridan comments
  206. that he put through the paperwork the day after he arrived, which
  207. tracks with this time-wise.)
  208. * Ivanova did NOT take the kerchief off either of the Drazi leaders
  209. in the council chambers; she walked PAST them, and signaled for
  210. two of the regular Drazi to come down out of the cheap seats.
  211. * Nope, that really was Claudia walking on her broken foot in the
  212. council chambers. She's a trooper....
  213. * "A race that speaks in macros" referred to the Drazi constantly
  214. repeating their stance, Green must fight Purple, Purple must fight
  215. Green, over and over...macros.
  216. * Ann Bruice did a great job on the technomage costumes; I agree.
  217. She found ways to implement what was described in the script that
  218. were both creative and wore well, and fulfilled the function. I
  219. wanted black, with fine silver lines, and an almost circuitboard
  220. look to the patterns in places, but not *obviously* that,
  221. stylized. She took that and came back with a true niftyness....
  222. * In order to create more involved alien makeups, and because many
  223. actors have a hard time with prosthetics, we created what we call
  224. the Babylon 5 Alien Rep Group; last year about five, and this year
  225. about 12 actors who we have taken full head and (in some cases)
  226. body casts, so we can use them in mid-level speaking roles as
  227. aliens and rotate them in and out. Since we had fewer last year,
  228. you saw Mark more than you'll see him this year. Green Drazi #1 in
  229. "Geometry" is one such rep group alien.
  230. We keep trying to find interesting solutions to interesting
  231. problems.
  232. * The techno-mages were not a homage to ShadowRun games, since I've
  233. never seen the game, and have never heard of it prior to seeing
  234. this message.
  235. * Yes, Ivanova's title in the opening credits *will* be changed to
  236. Commander, to reflect her change in rank. And we'll be adding a
  237. rank for Lt. Keffer. It's kind of funny; we keep treating the
  238. opening title this year as a work in progress, reflecting little
  239. changes here and there...changes in faces, narration, little
  240. musical changes that will come by about episode five or six.....
