  18. Just an update...on Monday we a) do the final mix on "Midnight on the
  19. Firing Line," so we'll have two finished and in the can, and b) finish
  20. shooting Christy's episode of "Grail." (And those of you who've been asking
  21. for nonhumanoid alien stuff...hold onto your hats for this one.) On Tuesday
  22. we start shooting "Mind War," with Walter Koenig, William Allan Young and
  23. Felicity Waterman. Both "Grail" and "Mind War" have been heavy on EFX, both
  24. visual (on set) and CGI.
  25. In looking at all the episodes shot to date, from a story point of view,
  26. I think that "Sky" is still my favorite, in how it ties into the whole 5 year
  27. arc. From a personal point of view, I'm very fond of "The Parliament of
  28. Dreams," which is a very funny show, and at times a very emotional show.
  29. "Parliament" is all over the place...it's got all of our major characters, our
  30. ambassadors, their seconds, we see lots of group scenes, we're all over the
  31. station, dipping in and out of three different but interconnected
  32. stories...it's really a matter of keeping a lot of balls in the air at one
  33. time, and I think we pulled it off nicely.
  34. BTW, we've finished assembling the main title sequence, and we're going
  35. to do one extra little thing to it that's kinda neat...more on this closer to
  36. airdate.

  49. We sneak in GEnie coordinates from time to time....
  50. We now have just under half the episodes now filmed, and just finished
  51. the final mix on "Midnight," so that's two totally completed. It takes a long
  52. time after an episode is finished to do a final mix, particularly on a show
  53. like this, since you've got to work out sound, score music, and do any
  54. rotoscope/Viz EFX stuff. Once you do the first one, after that they fall into
  55. place on a weekly basis (so next Monday we should have the final on "Purple,"
  56. then the following Monday we'll finalize "Infection," and so on).
  57. "Midnight" is very cool, by the way. Christopher Franke's music really
  58. brings the action scenes to life. It's amazing how much that adds to a show.
  59. Had an interesting conversation today with one of our crew. I was
  60. talking to someone else about the writing philosophy on the show, and how it's
  61. comparable to a tryptich...you line up the stories and you begin to see a much
  62. broader story after a while. A series of interconnected images.
  63. And this crew person said that I was wrong, that wasn't how the show is
  64. being done. Now lemme tell you...we encourage people on every level to speak
  65. frankly, at any time, to any one, but it takes considerable cojones to say
  66. something like that to one's exec producer, that he has his own series wrong
  67. in the description. "Oh?" says I.
  68. He explains that what it is, is "holographic storytelling." I asked him
  69. what the hell this meant. He said that the image of pictures side by side,
  70. linear storytelling, wasn't right. That after he read two scripts, he went
  71. back and reread the first one, and now he could see things in it that he
  72. hadn't seen before. When he'd read three, again he glanced over the first,
  73. and new things had come out.
  74. "What it IS," he said, "is not side-by-side images, but *overlaping*
  75. images, like old fashioned photographic plates stacked up one on top of the
  76. other. Each has a piece of the whole picture. When you line them all up, one
  77. behind the other, and look through all of them at once, you realize what the
  78. picture is. It's three-dimensional storytelling."
  79. I had to think about that one a long time, but frankly, he's right, and
  80. I'm wrong. That *IS* what we're doing, and I've been describing it
  81. incorrectly all this time.
  82. Holographic storytelling...well, live and learn, I say.

  94. Now that we've finished mixing some shows, we've now seen how Kosh
  95. speaks, followed through to the end. It's a very unusual system that he's got
  96. there, and it's *real* creepy to watch/listen to it. The kind of thing that
  97. makes your skin crawl after a while.
  98. I love it.
  99. Today, ter Koenig's 2nd day working in the B5 universe, as a Psi Cop in
  100. "Mind War." He's doing well, taking part in some very difficult scenes (fight
  101. scenes and the ilke), and it's a very powerful performance, not at ALL what
  102. people have seen before. He's a terrific performer when given a role with
  103. some meat to it. And the dailies look great. I think this episode will wake
  104. up a lot of people who have never seen Walter as anything other than Chekov.

  110. Yes, people will go to the bathroom. ANd yes, they will speak in their
  111. own languages when amongst their own kind...but just as with a WW II movie,
  112. when you show the germans talking to one another, it'll be English. On those
  113. occasions when someone speaks Narn around humans, then of course it's another
  114. language, and will sound that way.
  115. The pilot was a tad too dark looking; we've taken a slightly lighter look
  116. for the series, while keeping the shadows and textures that we want.
  117. What a weird day...I just get over the flu, this is my first really
  118. healthy day, and on the way back from the lunch trucks I slip spraining my
  119. ankle. Now, after I've had the flu, I generally tend to dress warmly for a
  120. few days, wear my slippers, to avoid falling back. So now here I am typing
  121. this with a bag of ice on my foot. Either way...I'm doomed.
  122. Funny incident today, though, also at lunch. Walter Koenig joined some
  123. of the cast members at their table for lunch, and as he came to the table,
  124. they all stood up at attention. When asked why, they explained that it's
  125. protocol for junior officers to stand when a senior officer comes to the
  126. table. It was kind of a nice moment.
  127. Shooting on "Mind War" continues to go well. Great stuff from Walter.
  128. Also, I've finally seen the final version of the B5 main title, with the
  129. addition of Christopher Franke's B5 theme music...and it's just terrific, a
  130. huge step over the pilot, much as I liked some aspects of that music. It's
  131. rich, romantic, full, aggressive, and it stays in the mind afterward.
  132. Looking good....

  138. The B5 soundtrack for the series is built from many different kinds of
  139. pieces, synthesized (based on one of the most extensive collection of
  140. musical/audio samples in the world, which Christopher has been in the process
  141. of collecting ever since he practically hand-assembled his first Moog), and
  142. symphonic, since we're using the Berlin Symphonic Orchestra for some elements
  143. of our score. It changes dramatically depending on the subject.

  160. Well, we've finished finalizing our main/opening titles sequence, and
  161. done the on-line editing, and now will put it into the process and start
  162. putting whole shows together. We've decided, in order to emphasize the
  163. cinematic aspects of our show, that it's taking more of a movie approach to TV
  164. SF...to do the main titles in letterbox format.
  165. And it looks really, really cool.

  171. Yes, the main titles will be in letterbox format for conventional
  172. televisions...we're taking the footage that we've shot in 16:9 aspect ratio,
  173. and shrinking it down just enough to fit, so there's black on top and bottom,
  174. the same way that, for instance, TNT shows movies in their full aspect ratio.
  175. And we've custom designed some CGI that also is in that format. (In the case
  176. of series footage that we're using, there you'll be able to compare the
  177. regular aspect ratio of the broadcast with what's in the main titles. In
  178. other words, there's a scene in "Parliament" of a Minbari gathering. In
  179. regular aspect, as part of the show, you'll see it one way. We've clipped a
  180. section of that for the main titles and used the full aspect ratio, and in
  181. that you'll see the far right and left sides normally clipped for standard TV
  182. aspect ratio.)
  183. Apparently this is also done on Dr. Quinn Medicine Woman, I learned the
  184. other day, so that'll give you some sense of it. It's very effective at
  185. giving a real cinematic feel to your main titles.

  191. No, it won't be rare. And that's the reason why we're NOT doing
  192. subtitles. This is the difference between something sounding neat on paper,
  193. but not in reality, and especially not on a TV series.
  194. If you're doing a feature film, and only have one or two shots of aliens
  195. talking in subtitles, for brief periods, you can do this; also if you're doing
  196. an SF series in which you're mainly talking to humans, and only rarely among
  197. your own kind.
  198. But in B5, a LOT of our time is spent with our various alien characters.
  199. And sometimes the conversation can get quite detailed, quite complex or
  200. political. In one script, for instance, there's a 2 1/2 minute scene with
  201. G'Kar and Na'Toth, followed by two lengthy scenes with Londo and Vir, and
  202. Delenn and Vir. So you're talking about maybe 5 minutes here. The
  203. conversation is very detailed, very elaborate. So are you a) going to put all
  204. of this complex dialogue on screen, line by line, and b) use subtitles for
  205. FIVE UNBROKEN MINUTES?
  206. You'd kill yourself as a series. No one would stand for it, and they'd
  207. be right. Again, not every good idea is a workable or practical idea.

  226. shooting on film, which can be converted to HDTV standards *very* easily. The

  266. okay? It's just...last night, I got in from the stage late, and the last 15
  267. minutes of the latest TNG effort was on, about the destructive warp engines.
  268. And I watched, astonished, as the Enterprise was buffetted by rift forces,
  269. damaged, another ship was damaged, the rift grew, the other ship was
  270. destroyed...and *all of it* until the very end, at which point they interfaced
  271. some stock footage with a bit of new stuff, ALL of that other material was off-
  272. camera, we saw *NONE* of it! It was just like radio drama...we *hear* about
  273. the ship getting hit, the rift doing this, ships blowing up, but we never see
  274. ANY of it.
  275. This came to mind today when I saw some of the new CGI footage from "Mind
  276. War," which is starting to look quite extraordinary. About every four-five
  277. episodes, we seem to take a jump in what we can do, how much we can do, and
  278. how good it looks. The latest batch of stuff is absolutely breathtaking. And
  279. in addition to everything else, the one thing that I come away with, the one
  280. thing that *no one* is doing, is the absolute SCALE of the show. In addition
  281. to sets and CGI as standalones, we're doing some groundbreaking work in
  282. composites, mattes, virtual sets and other stuff.

  294. After we'd finished shooting, I fired up bits of our first couple of

  332. There's been a film crew here already, some time ago, during shooting,
  333. and several behind-the-scenes pieces have been cut of various length; one
  334. promotional piece of 8 minutes has already been downlinked. More, of greater
  335. length, will follow.
  336. We've now deliered 4 complete episodes to PTEN, and the reaction we've

  338. something very special here. I let Walter Koenig see a coupe of shows,
  339. including the director's cut of the one he's in, and he like what he saw a

  341. So far, so good....
  342. Today was crash day. I've been running on 4 hours sleep, running around

  348. a.m. and didn't open my eyes again until 5 p.m. I feel vaguely human for the
  349. first time in ages.
  350. (And kind of a personal triumph; I bought a 4-pack of John Lennon CDs,
  351. and can finally listen to them. I wasn't a stone Beatles fan, wasn't a
  352. hardcase Lennon fan, but when he was killed, when that genius was stilled, I

  355. killing my pleasure in the music. I'm finally, finally able to listen to it

  380. and I just wanted to note that there are two reasons for this:
  381. 1) Whenever something of mine is aired, or shown, as with "Midnight," I

  384. As for 2)...a word in the ear of every person reading this who uses the
  385. keyboard incessantly: *BUY WRIST GUARDS*. For the last year or so, I've been
  386. fighting carpal tunnel syndrome. The problem is that I write 10-12 hours a
  387. day, and when I'm going at white-heat, I've been clocked at nearly 120 words
  388. per minute...one person who listened noted that during one particular session
  389. the click-click-click didn't pause, didn't slow for nearly twenty minutes
  390. straight. I fall through the screen and come out somewhere else, hours later.
  391. The downside of which being...I'm having *real* problems with CTS right
  392. now. As we gear up for the last part of the season, I'm behind the keyboard
  393. constantly, when I'm not in editing. During the Thanksgiving break, I was
  394. averaging 20 pages a day. Early in that process, the CTS settled in bigtime.
  395. The pain is nearly constant, all day, all night. To pick up a can of soda is
  396. an exercise in profound discomfort. To *type* is beyond description. I'm
  397. doing everything I can to minimize it, including sending for some new wrist
  398. supports and wrist braces, but apparently this stuff is cumulative.
  399. It's not stopping the writing, not by so much as a comma, but it makes me
  400. more inclined to quick, short messages than my usual mini-novels.
  401. I learned a long time ago how to burn through pain, so it's not a problem on
  402. that level. Once the season's over, we'll evaluate where things stand, and
  403. whether this can be ameliorated by exercises or surgery or whatever. But I'm
  404. a *writer*, and that means I'll write if they cut off my arms and legs and I
  405. have to type with my nose. Nor is this message intended for sympathy. No
  406. sympathies are expected or requested. This is just one more challenge to B5.
  407. My only thought at this moment is with those reading this: if you do lots
  408. of work behind the computer, take breaks, wear wrist braces, get a support for
  409. your keyboard, do wrist-hand exercises. You wouldn't like this. Trust me.
  410. This show has been an act of sheer will now for nearly seven years. So
  411. what else is new?
  412. By Friday we finish shooting "Chrysalis," which looks *gorgeous*. Then
  413. comes "Deathwalker," with Sarah Douglas and Robin Curtis. It's another of our
  414. very tough episodes, written by Larry the D. With "Chrysalis" it's 12 down
  415. and 10 to go. We're on the downward slide, and it's coming up fast.

  555. No, on balance, I'd say that it has not given me a dislike for all things
  556. Trek. I think it comes with the turf.
  557. There are three things that I put to *some* degree on the same level, at
  558. least from a sociological level (though there are obvious differences in true
  559. or perceived quality): the Beatles, Star Trek, and Stephen King. All are
  560. media phenomenon, all are very much of their time. When people say, "Oh, so
  561. and so is the next Stephen King," that's nonsense, because King fills a
  562. particular slot that no one else can really hit; same with the Beatles.
  563. Groups may come along that may sell more records than the Beatles ever sold,
  564. may be even more popular, but no one else will ever play the specific social
  565. role that the Beatles played in their time; no one else will ever be at that
  566. specific juncture. They are all icons.
  567. When the Rolling Stones made Phase Two of the British invasion of the
  568. 1960s, they were constantly being compared to the Beatles, evaluated in terms
  569. of the Beatles, and it pissed them off mightily, because they weren't the
  570. Beatles, didn't play the same kinds of songs as the Beatles, and the only
  571. thing they had in common was that they were both British. But the American
  572. media, basically unfamiliar with the British scene, lumped them into the same
  573. category.
  574. Star Trek played a pivotal role in TV SF. There can be no mistake about
  575. that. Other shows may someday supplant it in longevity, or ratings, or
  576. popularity, or following, but no other show will ever take that show's place.
  577. No other show will ever be "the new Star Trek." Not even the, well, the new
  578. Star Trek(s). Trek provided a terrific foundation; it's unfortunate that in
  579. 25+ years, not much has been done really to build upon that foundation and
  580. take SF-TV to the next logical level. Maybe B5 can do that. I certainly hope
  581. so. Maybe not. I could be living in a fool's paradise. But if not us, then
  582. sooner or later, someone will take that next step.
  583. I've always liked the original Trek series, and always will. Even wrote
  584. an issue of the ST comic, "Worldsinger," for DC.

  594. Christopher Franke is developing themes for each of the characters, plus
  595. themes for the station, for space in general, and for our various
  596. aliens...something that carries a sense of the minbari, the grey council,
  597. others. He even wrote a wonderful little Narn libretto for G'Kar, a la
  598. Gilbert and Sullivan. Some elements carry across shows, but in each show

  624. My sense is that we have Sinclair narrating from some point in the
  625. future. The transition of grammar takes place as we push into the station,
  626. from the outside in. This was the last of the Babylon stations, and this
  627. particular segment of it is set in 2258. (Season two would say, "The year is
  628. 2259." And so on.)
  629. Many here will remember a show called "You Are There." The usual
  630. narrator would say, paraphrasing here but keeping the grammar, "The year 1776
  631. was crucial to our nation's history. The founding fathers were on the brink
  632. of declaring independence. It's a moment of great importance. The year is
  633. 1776...and You Are There." It's along those lines. The purpose of the

  844. There is nothing wrong with the launch sequence. It causes them to move
  845. directly away from the station, on a slight spiral, facing out to the stars
  846. from the pilot's POV. Whether or not it looks funky has little to do with
  847. whether or not this is the most efficient means of doing this. I think it's
  848. kind of funky that the space shuttle flies upside down while in orbit, its
  849. cargo bay facing down toward Earth, but that's the way it's done, and there
  850. are good reasons for it. We sat down for a very long time with a bunch of

  885. Many of the huge transports that'll be coming to B5 were never meant to
  886. operate within an atmosphere, they're strictly deep range starships, to which
  887. you transfer using atmosphere-capable shuttles. We're not talking little
  888. flits, we're talking about ships that can be as big as a mile across.
  889. Dropping something that huge down into the gravity well of a planet is just
  890. unworkable. If you want something that can handle lots of big ships, it *has*
  891. to be in space...as in a station.
  892. You could park a big ship near a planet, and use lots of shuttles to
  893. unload it down to the planet (gravity well, heavy cargo, lots of fuel, lots of
  894. time, more accidents), then haul it right back *up* again when it's sold or
  895. transferred...or you could build a station in zero G where your big transport
  896. just parks alongside, loads or unloads its cargo in zero gravity, and transfer
  897. it where needed.
  898. And the atmosphere of the planet is no longer breathable.

  944. Better grab your seats early; this'll be a biggie. And probably the only

  946. anywhere, at least as of this writing.)
  947. (Those who've seen sections of both at cons...I assume that "Midnight" is

1029. STRACZYNSKI [Joe] at 21:10 EST
1030. By the way...on the Kosh poisoning thread, which was originally to be
1031. discussed in "Parliament"...we ended up about 3 minutes long on "Parliament,"
1032. and three minutes short on D.C. Fontana's "War Prayer." So we lifted that
1033. scene and inserted it into her episode, doing a small bit of ADR to facilitate
1034. the move. It's now quite seamless.
1035. There's some small amount of blurring that goes on in this show; a
1036. freelancer turns in a script, and things get added. For instance, there was a
1037. need to really tighten up the story in "Believers," which could best be done
1038. by bringing in a small B story, which would allow us to streamline and
1039. intensify the main story. So I wrote the B story and slipped it in. In
1040. "Grail," for instance, there's a courtroom scene with a character named Mr.
1041. Flinn that was added to the script (I won't reveal what happens, but it's very
  1042. funny.)
1043. And of course nearly all of the freelance scripts have been based on
1044. assigned stories, something that's developed in-house (particularly if it's an
1045. arc story) and then given to a writer to do the full outline and script. So
1046. far the only story developed *outside* our offices first is D.C. Fontana's
  1047. second script, "Legacies."
1048. In none of these, however, will you see more than one writer's name on
1049. the script. Just the writer who did the draft. This is a policy I've had for
1050. a long time, starting on JAKE. It's somewhat pro forma for some story editors
1051. or producers to do a rewrite, or add a scene, and then slap their name on the
1052. finished script...which cuts into the freelance writer's residuals forever
1053. thereafter. My feeling is that if you're on staff, you are being compensated
1054. well for your work, and should leave the freelancers alone. The residuals are
1055. really their only way of making any real money off these things. So we had a
1056. non-arbitration policy on JAKE, also on MURDER, and now on B5. You'll never
1057. see a gang credit on this show. Having been a freelancer myself, this sems
1058. the only fair way to run things.
