  27. Yeah, that was our first Hugo...just sorta slipped it in with
  28. Ivanova's other awards. It was kind of a nod back to our fans...and I
  29. think the first time that a Hugo has been shown on-screen in a series
  30. that has *won* a Hugo.

  48. > keeper? Are we to assume we'll never know the answers to any of
  49. > these questions?
  50. The Drak and Centari Prime?
  51. Vir is Emperor now. Londo asked Sheridan to free his people; we
  52. can assume he did this...but we will also be showing this in the
  53. Centauri Prime trilogy of books in more detail.
  54. Londo?
  55. We saw Londo's fate in War Without End Part 2.
  56. Lyta?
  57. The telepath crisis and events surrounding it will provide a lot
  58. of the background to Crusade.
  59. Bester and the Psi Corps?
  60. Ditto.
  61. G'Kar?
  62. We saw his fate in WWE2 also.
  63. Garibaldi and Bester?
  64. This will be covered in the Psi Corps trilogy, of which volume 1
  65. is out now, and volume 2 is in my hands for editing.
  66. B5's seemingly needless and useless destruction?
  67. Neither needless nor useless. It was built cheapest of all the
  68. stations, and it takes a lot of money to maintain it. With trade
  69. routes now going around it, there isn't enough income to support it.
  70. So do you leave it intact, for others to occupy or raid for weapons
  71. systems and other systems too difficult to yank out? Or take it out,
  72. the same way we implode buildings now?
  73. Sheridan's son - we guess he survived the Drak and their intended
  74. keeper?
  75. This will also be covered in the Centauri Prime trilogy...but if
  76. you sit back you can do some of the work to figure out a large part of
  77. this. As Londo states, his situation in WWE2 (Sheridan and Delenn
  78. captured on Centauri Prime) takes place 18 years after the events in
  79. 2260, which would put it at 2278. The urn, given to Sheridan in 2262,
  80. is supposed to be given to the heir at the occasion of his/her 16th
  81. birthday, by Centauri tradition.
  82. That would put the urn presentation at...ding!...2278.
  83. In 2278, Sheridan and Delenn have been drawn to Centauri Prime.
  84. We know their son is involved, because Delenn says "David is safe." So
  85. they were somehow able to save him, because we know that in 2281, David
  86. is alive and well and serving in the Rangers (SiL).
  87. You can see the shape of the events there...once again the clues
  88. are more or less in plain sight...but again, this will be drawn out in
  89. the books in more detail.

  242. T.P.Chai <104674.3064@compuserve.com> asks:
  243. > your comments?
  244. They're nitwits.
  245. Look...first off, nobody *has* to buy anything. If you want to
  246. learn more about the characters after the duration of the show, and you
  247. want to buy the novels or whatever, fine, you have that option. But
  248. you didn't have to buy them to enjoy the series...and I'm working hard
  249. to make sure you don't even have to have watched the series to enjoy
  250. the novels.
  251. There are two fundamental choices here, given that fans want
  252. more stuff in the B5 universe. Either you do novels that have nothing
  253. to do with anything, or you make them canon. Fans wanted the books
  254. canonical, as do I. That's the point of a coherent, consistent,
  255. sustained universe.
  256. The Psi Corps novels, for instance, track Bester's life from
  257. birth to death, and the development of the Corps. Is that essential
  258. reading to follow any of the B5 episodes? No. Is it cool if you want
  259. to learn more about it and enrich the experience? Yes. So where here
  260. is the problem?
  261. Look...some folks have always looked for an excuse to rag on
  262. this show, so they could bug me and anybody who likes the show. First
  263. it was that B5 couldn't possibly be as good as Trek because there
  264. wasn't any merchandise; now there's merchandise and they say now THAT
  265. means it can't be good.
  266. If you never bought a single book or outside material, you could
  267. still enjoy the series. None of it is required. So the complaint is
  268. unjustified and silly.
  269. Should we not give fans of the show a chance to acquire more
  270. info about the B5 universe and characters because a few folks complain
  271. that it's a franchise? Nonsense. The problem is theirs, nobody
  272. else's.

  484. The intro movie, "A Call to Arms," is still slated for January
  485. 3rd; the series initiall was going to go in January, then they moved it
  486. to June 2nd to make room for the NBA playoffs, and now that it looks
  487. like the playoffs may not happen, I'm hearing March/April.

  495. > *sigh* Any word on a possible DVD release?
  496. "Even more than the weekday strip, *this* is the way the series was
  497. made to be watched. Without interruptions, without a 24 hour (still
  498. less 7 day or several month) gap between episodes it becomes a whole
  499. different experience. And the earliest episodes look different when
  500. watched again after each season."
  501. This is pretty much the reaction of everyone who's sat and
  502. watched the show through in a concentrated form; it's a whole other
  503. show. It's all contiguous, even when it looks like it ain't, and the
  504. artificial breaks were pretty much ignored in the writing.
  505. "This is a staggering achievement, especially within the confines of
  506. American commercial television. I don't think anyone yet realizes what
  507. you've done here. And when they get the first dim glimmers of the idea,
  508. and try to copy it, they'll only see the surface mechanics of a
  509. continuing story and never see the sheer *work* that went into crafting
  510. almost every line and gesture of each of each show so that it could pay
  511. off two or three years down the road."
  512. I'm okay with that; I always said that B5 wouldn't really be
  513. appreciated for what it is for several years down the line. This is a
  514. part of the reason for that. It has to run through several times, and
  515. become a part of the general consciousness, and be perceived for what
  516. it is.
  517. "This is the first series I've ever seen that *can't* be fully
  518. appreciated the first time through. Reruns aren't a commercial
  519. byproduct of this show, in a curious way they are the point. I'm
  520. finally starting to see what you meant long ago when you mentioned a
  521. "four dimensional hologram.""
  522. (Actually the term was holographic storytelling, but the point
  523. obtains.) Usually, reruns are considered an aftermarket...here the show
  524. was written with that in mind to some extent. It was written for the
  525. long haul, so to speak.
  526. I'll be very curious to see the perception of the show ten years
  527. hence.
