  78. At this point, I don't know if I can do SDCC or not this year; I
  79. had to cancel out one convention already around that time, because of
  80. the need to gear up Crusade. I'd assumed that I wouldn't have anything
  81. going this Summer, so I booked a number of conventions all in the same
  82. two month period of time, kind of a post-B5 blitzkreig. Then all hell
  83. broke loose. So I may either not go (first time for that in 12 years)
  84. or just pop down on one day for a quick Dealer's Room run-through and
  85. out. I can't just go for the one day if I do my full
  86. presentation...I'm too whacked afterward for shopping at the DR, and I
  87. can do so beforehand because I'm prepping for the presentation. So
  88. I'm kinda unsure right now what to do, and what I'll have time for.

  106. And a lot of people said, "Well, we'll never really know." This
  107. despite all the basic facts being confirmed by both sides.
  108. I quote from an interview with Claudia just published in the
  109. Summer issue of Sci Fi Invasion:
  110. Question: By you quitting, Straczynski lost Ivanova. He
  111. couldn't have been happy about that.
  112. Claudia: I think he feels like I put them out or something by
  113. quitting the show, when in essence I don't really think it affected
  114. anything. (small snip) I just didn't think there'd be a lot for me to

  117. She has finally confirmed it: I told the truth from the

  195. Victories come in all sizes; in some ways, this is a small one,
  196. in other ways this is a big one.
  197. For four years, we bugged Warner Bros. Home Video about
  198. releasing B5 on videocassette in retail outlets. But WB has never
  199. released a series before on tape, it's not something they *do*, not
  200. sufficiently prestige when compared with their big movies. Eventually
  201. they were persuaded to let Columbia House try it for mail-order, for
  202. the first season.
  203. And CH was *swamped* with orders. Phones rang off the hook, and
  204. tapes were back-ordered to try and fill the demand.
  205. And Warner Bros...noticed.
  206. And this month, they made a big announcement about the coming
  207. release of Babylon 5 on video through retail outlets all over the
  208. country. I've seen the cover designs for the first batch, and they're
  209. extremely good looking montages, each specifically designed for that
  210. tape. They're putting a lot of thought and effort and time into this,
  211. and a big campaign. I believe the first batch hits the stands in July
  212. or August, somewhere in there.
  213. This is a big victory for us. On a grand scale, it may seem
  214. minor, but it's the most direct statement of "you were right" we've
  215. ever had from WB, and they were sufficiently mensches to say so, and
  216. act on it.
  217. If these go well, they're also talking laserdisks and DVDs down
  218. the road, and should THAT happen, I'm going to push like hell to have
  219. them release the widescreen versions.
  220. But that's the next campaign. For now, this is a big victory
  221. for us, and we're mighty pleased.

  231. going on at the time was what I said it was...and a few folks are
  232. saying, "Well, now it doesn't matter." Well, it does matter, when it's
  233. my integrity and honesty that's at issue. If the original question was

  326. often extremely changed when John and I go in to do our version, so

  388. Peace can be a surrender as well as an achievement, especially
  389. when facing an enemy dedicated to something unpleasant. Chamberlin
  390. returned from a visit to Germany with a so-called agreement in his
  391. hands, and announced that by granting concessions to Hitler, he had

  393. Peace is a byproduct of victory against those who do not want

  452. > of the best regular cast-size to accomplish long-term
  453. > storytelling?
  454. There's really no best regular size. B5 generally had about 9-
  455. 11 regulars and recurring (i.e., in the main credits) actors in any
  456. given season, which was necessary because you had 4 different,
  457. competing forces, each of whom required some representation (Earth/B5,
  458. Minbar, Narn, Centauri Prime). With an ambassador plus aide, that's 8
  459. minimum, plus at least one or two others for station operations.
  460. In Crusade, we're really dealing with one force encountering
  461. others on a per-episode basis (mostly), so we've got 6 regulars/recurs,
  462. with a subset of reappearing characters (a la Morden, Bester or Corwin
  463. in B5). That feels about right to me.

  926. Subject: Cast Decline Crusade
  927. {original post had no questions}
  928. To clarify:
  929. Jerry was never offered a contract on Crusade. When he
  930. negotiated his deal on "A Call to Arms," WB attempted to get an option
  931. on him for the series, as a matter of due course. They did so for
  932. everyone appearing in the movie, including Jeff and Tracy, since it is
  933. in many ways a set-up for Crusade. This is a pro-forma thing done in
  934. such situations by any studio when they're dealing with a new series
  935. being set up. It doesn't exclude any kind of appearance in Crusade on
  936. a guest basis or more than that.
  937. Frankly, I think Jerry would do better on a per-episode
  938. negotiation (and would be better featured that way) than to get tied up
  939. with an option. And told him so when he approached me for advice on
  940. whether or not to let himself get saddled with an option.
  941. The best possible situation would be a central core of new
  942. characters who can move through the B5 universe, and run into our
  943. familiar characters, on an as-needed basis, as determined by the story.
  944. It gives the story maximum flexibility, and lets the actors negotiate
  945. sort of "a la carte," if you will, which means they'll almost certainly
  946. get more than if they get locked down and have to do X-number of
  947. episodes at a pre-negotiated price.
  948. And that seems to be pretty much what we're heading toward. In
  949. addition, I think we need to have the B5 cast available for a feature
  950. film that is getting more and more probable by the day. That, to be
  951. honest, is where they're finally going to make the kind of money
  952. they've all earned by staying with this show for this long.

  958. Subject: Cast Decline Crusade
  959. {original post had no questions}
  960. One last follow-up to underline why I suggested Jerry not go for
  961. the option. A CONTRACT is a *guarantee* that you will pay X actor Y
  962. dollars to appear in Z episodes. An OPTION ensure's the studio's
  963. *right* to your services, but does not *guarantee* them. So you can be
  964. under option, and at the last moment, the studio can decide not to
  965. exercise that option...and you get nothing.
  966. Why is this important? Because all of the actors are out now
  967. looking to build on what they've established in their careers over 5
  968. years of B5, with possibilities of leads on other better-paying network
  969. gigs, features, who knows. But if you go to network A and they want
  970. you, but find out that someone else has an option on you that may
  971. preclude you from working for them, then they're going to find someone
  972. else.
  973. An option like this ties you down, with the possibility of not
  974. getting any other work, and in the end may not even be exercised.
  975. Coming hot off the big fifth year promotion, I can see why this might
  976. not be high on someone's list of possibilities.
