  22. Kosh may have known that this moment would come, but knowing the

  24. one can forgive Kosh for his outburst. I think, in the end, he was

  52. See, here's what I don't understand in all this.
  53. It's not that the cast was let go, THE SHOW IS OVER. You can
  54. only "let go" of an actor if the show continues and the actor is out.
  55. THE SHOW IS OVER. I've been saying for five years, "This is a five year
  56. story. When it's over, it's over."
  57. I think part of the problem was that some in the cast didn't
  58. want to ever deal with the reality of that until it hit them. I read
  59. many interviews where they said, "Well, Joe says it's a five year
  60. story, but I don't see any reason why this can't go on." If you
  61. cushion yourself from it, then it can only hit you in the face later.
  62. (On the last few days of shooting, several people asked, "Why couldn't
  63. it have been a *six* year arc? Why the arbitrary five?" It is what it
  64. is.
  65. Toward the end of filming, we spoke to all the cast, apprised
  66. them of the work progressing toward a feature film, the likelihood of
  67. additional TV movies before then, and so on. But we also said,
  68. specifically, "Babylon 5 the series is over."
  69. But you must admit that it's quite a jump between "the series is
  70. over" and "the actors were fired." Technically speaking, EVERYONE is
  71. fired when a show is over.
  72. As for Crusade, there are a couple of people who might
  73. transition over, but that is *a different series*. And must have its
  74. own identity (should it go into production). You maybe do one or two
  75. B5 feature films, with the whole cast, as Crusade runs on a separate
  76. track on TV.
  77. As for John Flinn...same situation. John was the DP on B5 for
  78. all five years, minus those episodes DPd by Fred Murphy. Babylon 5 is
  79. now over, and so that task is over. Crusade (see previous disclaimer)
  80. should have an entirely different look from B5, to make it its own
  81. show, and that generally requires a different DP. That's pretty much
  82. standard in the business.

  98. > You said it once yourself -- you write with passion, otherwise,
  99. > why bother?
  100. Absolutely, there's no question that I'm going to be hit by
  101. those with an interest in hitting me on any side of these issues.
  102. Crusade would be done because I want to have some *fun* after doing 5
  103. years of angst...so there are bound to be those who say it's selling
  104. out because it's not the same as B5 in that respect...if I have a
  105. primarily new cast, I sold out the old cast, if I have a primarily old
  106. cast, I'm being afraid of change...if it's too much like B5 some will
  107. complain, if it's too different some will complain....
  108. Which is why, at the end of the day, you can never let the
  109. complaints (or, for that matter, the praise) tilt you one way or
  110. another. The only thing you can do is follow the small, still voice at
  111. the back of your head that tells the stories, and write for yourself.
  112. If you write well, enough people will stay around to keep you on the
  113. air...if you don't, they won't. That's always struck me as the fairest
  114. bargain around.

  155. budget, WB puts up the rest, same as with any network show. There was
  156. some initial talk of a sixth season by some folks over there, but I

  168. It's not free-form, but it's not by the minute, either. We have
  169. an overall running time of about 42 minutes (plus credits), and that
  170. gets divided into teaser, 4 acts and a tag. The duration of those

  189. not owned by anyone, DS9 did not invent it. You can only "rip off"
  190. something that is specific to that item or thing; if they came up with

  244. but for other potential writers do you solicit resumes/writing
  245. samples/outlines?"
  246. Usually, I know the writer's work, so it's just a matter of
  247. getting them in and handing them a premise (or in some rare cases,
  248. asking them to come up with a story pitch). If it's someone whose work
  249. I don't readily know -- and this is rare for me to do on a first
  250. season, when I know that every episode has to kick -- I'll call the
  251. person's agent and get some samples of their prior produced work.
  252. Since there are only 11 available slots for this season, that
  253. doesn't leave a lot of room right off the bat, and I have about 6-7
