  82. Exactly (and thanks). A few people have interpreted the final
  83. card as "meanspirited" (when it's on one level a reaction *to* five
  84. years of constant carping and meanspiritedness from lots of sectors,
  85. from the nets to the press and elsewhere)...but what it is, is a
  86. statement of hope. That whenever you try something different, there
  87. are going to be naysayers, and people who say it can't be done, and
  88. certainly can't be done by *you*.
  89. It ain't just B5, it's any dream out there.
  90. And in the end, they are wrong.
  91. Faith manages.
  92. That's the message of the card.
  93. That, and the truth that in 10 years the naysayers will be
  94. forgotten, and made irrelevant...but the show, the *show*...goes on.
  95. And will be around long after they and I have gone to dust. And all
  96. people will know when they see that card, 50 years from now, was that
  97. some jerks said it couldn't be done, and they were wrong, because they
  98. are *always* wrong. If you have the dream, the ability and the
  99. passion, you can bring your dreams to life despite overwhelming
  100. opposition. That's the message.
  101. But for those on the other side, they will never see anything
  102. other than meanspiritedness because that's all they can *ever*
  103. see...because that's all they can bring to the table.
  104. There's an old saying about books, which I'll rephrase to
  105. include B5: Babylon 5 is like a book, and a book is like a mirror: if
  106. an ass peers in, you can't exactly expect an apostle to peer out.

  114. "Happily your note could only be read as mean-spirited by someone
  115. feeling a bit guilty. It is a mirror: you get out of the comment what
  116. you put into it's creation. You see it as a redemption/accomplishment
  117. of a plan, I see it as a confirmation of my own fandom, and a critic
  118. will see it as an insult on his/her own unkind words."
  119. Something for everyone....
  120. "But have you had many negative comments about it? I hope not as many
  121. as you've had positive."
  122. No, not that much...and what there is, is mainly from the
  123. weasels for whom it was somewhat intended.
  124. "BTW: was my interpretation of the fiery emergence of the Agamemnon an
  125. over-interpretation on my part? Or will you remain enigmatic - it
  126. means whatever it means!"
  127. It seemed an appropriate placeholder when WB told us we had to
  128. omit Claudia's credit because she also appears in (the new) 522,
  129. "Sleeping in Light," to avoid incurring fees.
  130. "It's been said B5 represents a paradigm shift in science fiction -
  131. and we're all better for it."
  132. Sometimes I think maybe we've actually done it....

  468. Some general stuff....
  469. Today, John Copeland and I finished re-editing "The Gathering,"
  470. the B5 pilot movie. While there were some areas we couldn't get into
  471. because of the complexity in redoing the mix, virtually every scene got
  472. tinkered with to one degree or another, and most important, the roughly
  473. 14 minutes of footage left out of the original version is now back in.
  474. The whole thing is tighter and faster, and there's more recent CGI,
  475. we'll have Chris Franke re-score it, and it's just in general a lot
  476. better. (Some parts of it even make more sense now.)
  477. One additional change: because of the desire on PTEN's part to
  478. have as many commercial breaks as possible, the 6-act script was
  479. jerry-rigged and broken down into 9 acts. One side-effect of this is
  480. that 9 acts wears on you, and wears you out, more than the standard 6.
  481. You start to get a feeling of being led up to things too often, and
  482. there isn't time to dwell on the acts you're in. I was finally able,
  483. with this re-edit, to move scenes back around again to what I
  484. originally wanted in a 6-act structure (you'll see a number of scenes
  485. juxtaposed from their original order).
  486. Anyway...the TNT Special Edition is much improved over the
  487. original.
  488. Other stuff: the fanclub site continues to expand and improve.
  489. If you haven't been around in a while, you may want to check it out
  490. again sometime soon (http://www.thestation.com). The chat room is
  491. running better than ever before, there are new graphics, and the B5
  492. Emporium should be online in a matter of days allowing purchase of B5FC
  493. stuff online with credit cards. (Mail order stuff is still being
  494. processed.)
  495. Latest additions to the lineup: Psi Corps hats and pins, patches
  496. of various sorts, Earth Alliance pins, Ship Recognition charts in
  497. poster form, and others.
  498. Finally, I'll be a Guest of Honor at this year's LosCon, held
  499. Thanksgiving weekend in L.A. at the Burbank Airport Hilton. My 2-hour
  500. B5 presentation will be Sunday afternoon, where I'll be showing clips
  501. from the two TNT tv-movies (including lots of stuff from the finished
  502. prequel), from upcoming S5 episodes, new bloopers and so on. I'll also
  503. be joined by John Copeland, producer, and Harlan Ellison, our
  504. conceptual consultant. This is always an SRO venue for us -- LosCon
  505. has been a part of B5 from the start -- so you may want to get there
  506. early. (Or even go the day before; it's a fun convention.)

  586. Actually, I was watching a debate on PBS a few weeks ago, and
  587. they made the point that Christianity may have been the *cause* of the
  588. fall of the Roman Empire, rather than its saving grace...apparently it
  589. began to take the church structure as its own model in how to operate
  590. (when its own infrastructure began to collapse), and put religious
  591. leaders into positions they should never have occupied for reasons of
  592. simple incompetence, and in short order things began to fall apart.

  615. Yes, that's the point...there will always be short-term
  616. setbacks, but as long as we climb back a few inches higher than we were
  617. before we fell down, we keep moving toward the goal of becoming a
  618. better people, and getting off the planet. Taking our place among the
  619. stars. While it's vaguely possible that I may *see* a Mars colony
  620. sometime within my lifetime, I know that I will never live there...but
  621. that ain't the point, it isn't a victory if *I* do it, and a failure if
  622. *I* don't, it's if *we* do it or not. Maybe we'll do it today, maybe
  623. we'll do it tomorrow, the point is to decide to DO it, and then by god
  624. DO IT.
  625. And yeah, that little closing card is going to remain on the
  626. show for its life...which will be long, long after its detractors (and
  627. admittedly myself) have gone to dust. On the one hand, it is a
  628. statement of hope to anyone else out there who has a dream, to follow
  629. it no matter who speaks against you, no matter the odds, no matter what
  630. they say to or about you, no matter what roadblocks they throw in your
  631. way. What matters is that you remain true to your vision.
  632. On the other hand, for the reviewers and the pundits and the
  633. critics and the net-stalkers who have done nothing but rag on this show
  634. for five years straight, it is also a giant middle finger composed of
  635. red neon fifty stories tall, that will burn forever in the night.

  644. Why did the story of Ishmael end at the last page of Moby Dick?
  645. Because that's when the story ended.
  646. A story is a slice of a continued and continuous world; the
  647. world exists before, and continues after. The story never ends; you
  648. just pull out pieces of it long enough to tell to other humans, who are
  649. finite and cannot wait for infinity to unravel itself and tell us what

  701. > Have you read Elaine Pagels book, "The Gnostic Gospels?"
  702. That's an odd perspective since so much of Medeival christianity
  703. ran on money...pilgrims providing a constant stream of money to various
  704. churches and shrines to saints, leading to competitions between
  705. shrines, and (of all things) the "sub-letting" of shrines by taking the
  706. bones of saint A and sending on bone to shrine B, another to shrine C,
  707. and generating money in those regions. And of course the buying of
  708. spiritual favors, patrons, the rich folk sending others to do penance
  709. for them...it was all about money.
  710. (Source: Finucane's MIRACLES AND PILGRIMS, a fascinating book,
  711. btw.)
  712. Interesting aside...for the last 6-8 months, I've been doing a
  713. fair amount of research into medieval England, especially the medieval
  714. church, for a play I'm writing (which may become a novel if I'm not
  715. careful). Dumped several hundred dollars on a massive order from
  716. Amazon.com back a few months ago to fill out what I needed. That was
  717. what tangentially led me into the post-Burn sequence in
  718. "Deconstruction." My brain has been full of monks for the last 8
  719. months or so, and knowing the role they played in maintaining secular
  720. knowledge from about 500 AD and for some time thereafter, that seemed
  721. the perfect route to go that would also resonate with the look of the
  722. Rangers and the religious caste Minbari and the whole feel we were
  723. setting up.
  724. It was only when I was about halfway into the act that I
  725. thought, "Oh, crud, this is the same area Canticle explored." And for
  726. several days I set it aside and strongly considered dropping it, or
  727. changing the venue (at one point considered setting it in the ruins of
  728. a university, but I couldn't make that work realistically...who'd be
  729. supporting a university in the ruins of a major nuclear war? Who'd
  730. have the *resources* I needed? The church, or what would at least LOOK
  731. like the church. My sense of backstory here is that the Anla-shok
  732. moved in and started little "abbeys" all over the place, using the
  733. church as cover, but rarely actually a part of it, which was why they
  734. had not gotten their recognition, and would never get it. Rome
  735. probably didn't even know about them, or knew them only distantly.)
  736. Anyway...at the end of the day, I decided to leave it as it was,
  737. since I'd gotten there on an independent road, we'd already had a
  738. number of monks on B5, and there's been a LOT of theocratic science
  739. fiction written beyond Canticle...Gather Darkness, aspects of
  740. Foundation, others.

1192. I and John Copeland select all of the directors on the show.
1193. Parenthetical to this: there are only 3 people who are in charge
1194. of this show: me, my partner Doug Netter (who mainly gets into the
1195. business aspect and casting), and producer John Copeland. That's it.
1196. Ain't nobody else. We're very producer light on this show.
  1197. End parenthetical.
1198. We go for directors whose work we know as a rule. In some
1199. cases, an agent will send us a reel (clips) of a director whose work we
1200. don't know, and if the material looks good, we'll sit down with the
1201. director (whichever way he/she came in) and see if their philosophy of
1202. production is the same as ours. If so, we give 'em a shot. If they
1203. work out, they do more; if not, not. We've actually got a pretty good

1330. Thanks; it's one of the things I try to do sometimes...I
1331. basically give you my playbook, I tell you I'm coming right up the
1332. middle, which makes the challenge on this side that much harder...you
1333. already know where I'm going to be, now I have to do it in such a way
1334. that it comes as a surprise regardless.
1335. This is actually more a literary device than a TV device; there
1336. are any number of books (and some movies) which start at the end,
1337. proceed to the middle, and end on the beginning.
1338. Because my background is in theater and prose, my natural
1339. inclination is to play with the form as much as possible. So each
1340. season there's been at least one episode that's "off-format" for
1341. us...Intersections was one, And Now for a Word was another, The
1342. Illusion of Truth, Deconstruction...and in S5 so far almost half the
1343. episodes have been off-format in one fashion or another. With this as
1344. the last year, I figure I may as well go for broke and try some unusual
1345. things. If you can't do these things when you're starting out, because
1346. it's too odd, you should at least do them when you're doing well and
  1347. can afford the risk.

1489. For hole-in-the-wall, try Salome Indian Restaurant at the corner
1490. of Magnolia and Lankershim in Studio City...what I like about it is
1491. that it doesn't back up and bite you an hour after eating it, which
1492. (for me) a lot of Indian food does, though I'm very fond of it

1496. I tend to eat there regularly. (Another terrific Indian restaurant is
1497. Taj Majal on Ventura Boulevard in Encino, around the 16000 block or so.
1498. They do a mango-corn chowder that's terrific, and just about everything
1499. else is good as well.)
1500. For Chinese, the Panda Inn in Glendale, at Wilson and Brand.
1501. They turned into a chain, but this is one of the original Panda Inns,
1502. and the food is spectacular. I recommend the Lemon Chicken, the Hot
1503. Braised Sliced Fish, the Panda Beef (crispy, very nice), the Crab/Corn
1504. soup, and if you like shrimp, the walnut shrimp is very nice.
1505. For coffee shops, Priscilla's in Toluca Lake (all these

1507. Hollywood Way is a common hangout for studio types, and the Horseshoe

  1528. > ?
1529. "Touchy, touchy! What's up Joe, hectic schedule or too many late
  1530. nights on the web?"
1531. No, I do sometimes get annoyed by people whose worldview is so
1532. small that they think that interrogation began with "The Prisoner" TV
1533. show and don't seem to know anything about the real world...and want to
1534. narrow you down to their view by saying that what you did springs from
1535. there, rather than the aforementioned real world. Fine, I'm glad that
1536. you've seen the Prisoner...now read a book or two about what happens to
1537. political prisoners in the real world. Then we'll talk.
1538. Further, as a writer you strive to create something
1539. original...and when someone comes along and says, of something based on
1540. the real world, on research, on stuff I encountered while getting my
1541. degree in clinical psychology, on years spent supporting PEN and
1542. Amnesty International, "Oh, you were just doing "The Prisoner"...it
  1543. tends to grate.
1544. "So where did the inspiration for the interrogators attire come from.
1545. You know dark suit, the hint of gold trim and buttons on the collar."
1546. Well, if you paid attention to the show you'd know that's a
1547. standard business suit which we've used many times before and
1548. thereafter; we literally pulled it off the rack in wardrobe. You saw
1549. that as a Prisoner suit because that's what you wanted to see.
1550. The problem isn't in the object being perceived; the problem is
1551. in the narrow world view of the perceiver who bends everything to fit
  1552. what he knows.

1560. Thanks. Yes, there are themes that are eternal and metamorphose
1561. and are reinvented regularly; that's the point of myth and the art of
1562. storytelling, so I agree with your premise. Each generation sees these
  1563. elements differently.

  1577. > 'year of hell' and B5 ?
1578. The *problem* is that it didn't happen that way, for starters,
1579. and it makes it into something more appropos for a fanzine. Basically,
1580. if you spent all summer building a car, and somebody said you just
1581. bought it from somebody else, no matter how nice that other car might
1582. be, how good it would be to be associated with it...you put in a hell
1583. of a lot of work building it, and to be offhandedly told otherwise is
  1584. annoying.
1585. And, again, it just diminishes the implications, makes it
1586. safe...it's not about the real world, it's just about the Prisoner.
