  23. <h2><a name="SY">Synopsis</a></h2>
  24. <p>
  25. Garibaldi and Keffer make their way toward the Centauri city. As they
  26. walk, Garibaldi continues his story.
  27. <p>
  28. He and Sinclair were low on air and their comlinks had stopped working
  29. suddenly. A hunch led Garibaldi toward a canyon, where to his great
  30. surprise -- and apparently Sinclair's as well -- they found a gigantic
  31. spidery ship apparently excavating another just like it as people from a
  32. nearby building watched. Was this what Sinclair was sent to look for,
  33. Garibaldi wondered?
  34. <p>
  35. A land vehicle approached them. Garibaldi pulled a gun on Sinclair
  36. and shot him. "Our coms were being jammed," he thought, "which, to my
  37. knowledge, meant <em>all</em> communications were jammed. That meant
  38. the other guys had to use an alternative way to communicate... and the
  39. possibilities made my skin crawl."
  40. <p>
  41. The vehicle came across Sinclair's body. Its armed occupants got out
  42. to investigate. They returned to the rover to find Garibaldi waiting for
  43. them; they were down before they could react. Garibaldi roused Sinclair
  44. from his stungun-induced slumber. The two had suspected they might be
  45. dealing with telepaths. Sinclair had asked Garibaldi to stun him so his
  46. thoughts couldn't be read.
  47. <p>
  48. Garibaldi and Sinclair quickly donned the telepaths' suits. Sinclair
  49. explained that he was investigating possible covert human-alien activities.
  50. Previous missions sent to investigate had found only the tip of one human ear,
  51. nothing else. Perhaps suspecting that the earlier missions had been
  52. sabotaged, Sinclair elected to go with Garibaldi's privately-run shuttle
  53. service rather than through official channels. "Right now, Garibaldi,
  54. you may be the only one I can trust," he said.
  55. <p>
  56. Their planned escape was cut short when they discovered that the only way
  57. back was the roadway the vehicle had come from -- straight toward the
  58. buildings and the mysterious alien ship, still performing its excavation.
  59. They decided to play along until they could escape, and followed the
  60. hand signals of the people on the ground. Unfortunately, that
  61. strategy led them straight toward the largest of the buildings. Garibaldi
  62. got out and tried to blend in with the other people; he was directed to load
  63. boxes onto a cargo platform attached to his vehicle. Then he was motioned
  64. to drive into the building -- straight into the belly of the whale, he
  65. imagined.
  66. <p>
  67. Inside the building was a horrific sight: a huge transparent dome containing
  68. a large alien biomechanical construct, veins and skin and bone intermingling
  69. with tubes and panels. Passing through the organism were scores of human
  70. bodies on a conveyer belt. The whole operation was being monitored by
  71. technicians in a small isolation area jutting out the side of the dome,
  72. as workers milled about the rest of the building with heavy weaponry.
  73. Suddenly, Garibaldi could feel darkness closing in around him, self-pity
  74. and fear building in his head. It subsided somewhat when he remembered
  75. what Sinclair said about trusting him; he gathered enough courage to get
  76. out of the vehicle and unload the boxes, one of which had contained something
  77. he wanted, something with which to cause a diversion later.
  78. <p>
  79. He walked closer to the dome and looked inside. The bodies
  80. on the conveyer belt appeared to have energy fields surrounding
  81. their heads. It was clearly some kind of medical experiment, but Garibaldi
  82. couldn't figure out what it was for.
  83. <p>
  84. His pause at the dome gave him away, or perhaps one of the telepaths happened
  85. to read his thoughts. Whatever the cause, a large group of people started
  86. heading his way. Luckily, he was carrying the box he wanted -- it was full
  87. of grenades. He tossed one into the crowd, but quickly found himself
  88. pinned down. Sinclair
  89. came to the rescue, bursting through a stack of boxes with the vehicle and
  90. confusing the situation long enough for Garibaldi to climb aboard. As the
  91. vehicle raced out of the building, Garibaldi tossed out the entire box of
  92. grenades; the resulting explosion ripped the roof off the building. They were
  93. pursued, but not for long. Whatever was inside the building, Garibaldi
  94. guessed, the telepaths wanted very badly to try to save.
  95. <p>
  96. As Garibaldi finishes his story, he and Keffer are discovered by two
  97. Centauri sentries, who lead them at gunpoint into the city. Later, the
  98. city magistrate tells them that his investigators found no trace of a crashed
  99. ship, or a fight in a clearing, as Garibaldi and Keffer described. But he
  100. remembers that Babylon 5 is where Londo Mollari -- the man responsible,
  101. Garibaldi learns, for saving Quadrant 37 from the Narn -- is stationed.
  102. He says he'll call Londo and try to verify Garibaldi's story.
  103. <p>
  104. Back on Babylon 5, Vir answers the call and tries to cover for Garibaldi and
  105. Keffer, but the magistrate insists on talking to Londo. Londo also covers
  106. for Garibaldi, but clearly isn't happy about it. He tells the magistrate to
  107. arrange for their transport back to Babylon 5. The problem resolved, he
  108. goes back to what he was doing: discussing something with Morden.
  109. <p>
  110. Garibaldi tells Sheridan what happened and explains that he thinks the erasure
  111. of his crashed ship links it to what he and Sinclair found on Mars. After
  112. they had escaped the telepaths, Garibaldi says, and gotten out of range
  113. of the comm jamming, they'd returned to the area with an Earthforce shuttle
  114. and found no trace of ships, explosions, buildings, or anything. Earthforce
  115. conducted a thorough search, but it was Sinclair and Garibaldi who found the
  116. one piece of evidence at the site. It wasn't enough to convince anyone,
  117. though, so they kept it to themselves.
  118. <p>
  119. "The alien ship we saw on Mars looks <em>exactly</em> like the ship Keffer
  120. saw in hyperspace when he helped rescue the Cortez," Garibaldi says.
  121. "Something's out there, Captain, something big and dangerous. And it doesn't
  122. want us to know it's out there. And Londo's involved. I don't know how,
  123. but I intend to find out." Sheridan believes Garibaldi, but for appearance's
  124. sake has to give him an official reprimand.
  125. <p>
  126. Keffer and Garibaldi talk about the outcome of their adventure. Keffer
  127. wonders if anyone survived the explosions on Mars. Garibaldi isn't sure; it's
  128. hard to see how anyone could have. Sooner or later, though, he's going to
  129. find out who owns the item he found on Mars: a Psi-Corps badge.
  130. <H2><A NAME="BP">Backplot</A></H2>
  131. <ul>
  132. <li> When Garibaldi and Sinclair were on Mars, they discovered a secret
  133. operation involving Psi-Corps and the Shadows, part of which was a
  134. medical experiment of some kind. They destroyed the operation, which
  135. was erased without a trace, presumably by the Shadows.
  136. <li> Londo's involvement in clearing up the Narn problem in Quadrant 37 (cf.
  137. <a href="/lurk/guide/022.html">"Chrysalis"</a>)
  138. is widely known among the Centauri.
  139. <li> Talia Winters survived the explosion on Mars, and may have been one
  140. of the experimental subjects. (This is shown on the last page of
  141. the comic, and is probably a spoiler for the episode
  142. <a href="/lurk/guide/041.html">"Divided Loyalties."</a>)
  143. </ul>
  144. <H2><A NAME="UQ">Unanswered Questions</A></H2>
  145. <ul>
  146. <li> What was the organism?
  147. <li> Who built or grew it? The Shadows likely had some input, but was
  148. it simply a gift from them?
  149. <li> Was it destroyed in the explosion?
  150. <li> What was the purpose of the Mars operation? Why were weapons
  151. being warehoused?
  152. <li> What were the two Shadow ships doing on Mars?
  153. <li> What is the connection between the Shadows and Psi-Corps?
  154. <li> Was Talia one of the people under the dome? (Garibaldi sees a
  155. blonde woman on the conveyer belt, but it's not clear if that's
  156. Talia or someone else.) If so, what was done to her?
  157. </ul>
  158. <H2><A NAME="AN">Analysis</A></H2>
  159. <ul>
  160. <li> This issue provides pretty compelling evidence that the Shadows were
  161. back in operation long before the Icarus stumbled across them (cf.
  162. <a href="/lurk/guide/038.html">"In the Shadow of Z'ha'dum."</a>)
  163. <li> It seems odd that the Shadow ship in the air just stood by and let
  164. Garibaldi and Sinclair escape unharmed. Perhaps it was simply there
  165. to perform an excavation mission and didn't care what else was going
  166. on.
  167. <li> Garibaldi is quite a storehouse of knowledge about what's going on:
  168. he knows about Londo's connection with Quadrant 37, knows about the
  169. Shadow connection to Psi-Corps (for that matter, knows about the
  170. Shadows, even if at the time of the story he doesn't know exactly
  171. what they are) and, possibly, knows that Talia was involved in a
  172. Psi-Corps experiment. Whether, and how, all this will surface on
  173. the show remains to be seen.
  174. <li> Assuming the Shadows were involved in the construction of the
  175. organism under the dome, this is also compelling evidence that they
  176. have mastered the creation of living technology. What's less clear
  177. is how much of that expertise Psi-Corps now has as well.
  178. <li> Could the fact that Talia was involved in the Mars operation have
  179. something to do with why Kosh was interested in her in
  180. <a href="/lurk/guide/009.html">"Deathwalker?"</a>
  181. Likewise, did Jason Ironheart
  182. (<a href="/lurk/guide/006.html">"Mind War"</a>)
  183. realize what was going on with her, and did he do anything to change
  184. the situation when he altered her abilities?
  185. </ul>
  186. <H2><A NAME="NO">Notes</A></H2>
  187. <ul>
  188. <li> On page 12, to the left of the dome, an indistinct shape can be seen
  189. standing by the wall. From its outline, it's obviously a Shadow.
  190. </ul>
  191. <H2><A NAME="JS">jms speaks</A></H2>
  192. <ul>
  193. <li> <em>Did you tell the artist what the organism under the dome should
  194. look like?</em><br>
  195. I didn't get too much into that one shot in the comic; it seemed
  196. reasonable under the circumstances. The one panel where I *did* get
  197. screwed was saying, "Hey, look, this here episode's going to air just
  198. before the book comes out, so why don't we REALLY tie the book and the
  199. show together by inserting this one panel I came up with here...."
  200. <p>
  201. Sometimes I outsmart myself.....
  202. <p>
  203. <li> <em>Didn't Garibaldi see Talia? Why didn't he recognize her later?</em>
  204. <br>
  205. Nope, he was looking at the process overall; he never saw Talia. The
  206. one shot of her is the omniscient POV, not his. (And even if he had
  207. seen her, it would've been only a glimpse of a blonde woman, no name
  208. that he could see, and after so many years, given that her condition
  209. wasn't great at the time, he wouldn't necessarily recognize her in any
  210. event.) But it's a moot point; the comic never indicated that he saw
  211. her.
  212. <p>
  213. <li> "...picture of Talia on conveyer with red net over her face."
  214. <p>
  215. C'mon...you're saying anybody'd be able to recognize a flash image of
  216. a woman with a red net over her face as much as 7 years later...?
  217. <p>
  218. <li> As I recall, the Winters, T badge was only visible in the next to last
  219. panel, which is a narrative flashback, not him personally.
  220. <p>
  221. <li> <em>Does Talia remember being on Mars?</em><br>
  222. I think that non-memory of the event is a good assumption.
