48.
Captain John Sheridan

49.
As written by series creator J. Michael Straczynski

50.

51.

52. A quick sketch
53.

54. Since this has just been released by PTEN, and will be
55. on the news wires shortly (and is probably already there),
56. I can now announce this here.
57.

58. The new Commanding Officer for Babylon 5 is Captain John
59. Sheridan, former captain of the Earthforce military starship
60. Agamemmnon. It was Sheridan who won what is arguably Earth's
61. only real victory during the Earth/Minbari War, destroying the
62. Minbari war cruiser Black Star and several accompanying
63. vessels. He has been appointed to Babylon 5 over the strenuous
64. objections of the Minbari Government, by the president's
65. insistence that Babylon 5 has had too much influence from the
66. Minbari and must begin to pull back and consider Earth's
67. interests; Sheridan is a symbol of that desire because of his
68. record, which is the reason for his assignment.
69.

70. Captain Sheridan will be portrayed by the well-regarded
71. actor Bruce Boxleitner, known to many as the series lead in
72. "Scarecrow And Mrs. King." He has also starred in numerous
73. TV movies, miniseries and feature films. He is also a solid
74. SF fan (media *and* print), and is very excited about coming
75. onto the Babylon 5 team. We're equally excited to have him.
76.

77.

78. Have any of the other officers served with Sheridan before?
79.

80. Only Ivanova has served with him before; Garibaldi
81. doesn't know him from Adam, and this will lead to some
82. awkwardness and questions of trust down the road.
83.

84.

85. How does Sheridan regard the Minbari?
86.

87. Sheridan is a soldier. A soldier is told, in wartime,
88. THIS is your enemy. You kill the enemy or your enemy kills
89. you. Afterward, you're in the same position American soldiers
90. were in after the end of WW II when it came time to reconcile
91. with the Germans and the Japanese. It can sometimes be very
92. awkward...and sometimes reconciliation takes a while.
93.

94.

95. Sheridan ought to add some tension to the series.
96.

97. [...] And you're right about the situation providing some
98. tension and story line possibilities; it ties into where
99. the story is going, and ups the ante on several emotional
100. levels, some personal (Garibaldi), some diplomatic (the
101. Minbari don't much like him).
102.

103.

104. Random additional information.
105.

106. Yes, Sheridan is descended from Gen. Philip John Sheridan of the
107. Union Army.
108.

109.

110. Response to an allegation that Sheridan is another Captain Kirk.
111.

112. For what it's worth, Sheridan is neither a "space cowboy" nor a
113. "gung ho type." This description has nothing to do with the character,
114. and I'm not quite sure where you got this. Certainly I never said or
115. implied it.
116.

117. Captain John Sheridan is a war hero, of sorts; he squeaked out the
118. only real victory of the Earth/Minbari War. (Which means the Minbari
119. don't generally like him a lot.) He did what he did because that's his
120. job. He's a professional soldier. For the last two years, he's been
121. commanding the Agamemmnon, a high-visibility Earthforce starship on deep
122. patrol. As such, he has had to learn to work with a number of different
123. races and species.
124.

125. In some ways, his character is somewhat more well-rounded than was
126. the case with Sinclair, over whom a general sense of doom often seemed to
127. hang. Sheridan is often very thoughtful and introspective; at other
128. times, he can be just a bit eccentric; he leads by respecting those who
129. work under him, and giving them room to grow; like any career officer, he
130. HATES the bureaucracy with a passion, and this is the one thing that can
131. drive him nuts; he knows that commanding B5 is a great opportunity, but
132. he also knows that his presence brings certain complications with it, and
133. he's very ambivilant about that aspect; he's the son of a diplomatic envoy
134. who disappeared on his 21st birthday, running off to see (of all things)
135. the new Dali Lama being installed; he has a very easygoing manner, and a
136. great sense of humor. He quickly re-forms a friendship with Ivanova, for
137. whom he has great respect and professional admiration. (For a time she
138. served under him at Io.)
139.

140. He is, actually, a fascinating and intriguing character with a lot
141. of different shadings...none of which have *anything* to do with being a
142. "space cowboy" or "gung-ho type."
143.

144. Anyway...point being...when it was announced that there was going to
145. be a new Lieutenant-Commander, a number of folks went ballistic and said
146. the show would now be ruined. I said, in essence, look...I created
147. Takashima; I can create an interesting character to replace her. And I
148. thunk up Ivanova, who according to the rec.arts.b5 poll is the most
149. popular character on the show. When it was announced that Sinclair would
150. be STAYING with the show, after the pilot, a number of folks said this
151. was bad, he was wooden, he stunk, get him off...and ended up being very
152. enamored of him. My only reply now about Bruce...give him, and me, a
153. chance. I genuinely think you will like what you see a *lot*.
154.

155. In the course of the first season, Ivanova, Garibaldi, G'Kar, Londo,
156. Delenn, others...they've exploded into strong characters. You need an
157. equally strong character designed to hold his own, and be memorable, in
158. that august company. Sheridan was designed knowing we had a much
159. elevated playing field around the character.
160.

161. Obviously, clearly, and irrefutably, an actor brings a *lot* to any
162. role. No question. But it tends to begin with what is created. I've seen
163. it said here, repeatedly, that none of the characters are uninteresting;
164. they all have lives, and agendas, that make them fascinating to watch:
165. Londo, Morden, G'Kar, Delenn, Garibaldi, Ivanova...what those characters
166. are came out of my head, in terms of who they are, what they say, what they
167. believe, where they came from and where they're going. Why would I invent
168. a new character that was any less involving, or interesting, o
169. multifaceted? Particularly knowing that he's going to be a central
170. character?
171.

172. Speaking as someone who's been in fandom a long, long time, I know
173. there is always a tendency for panic, to assume the apocalypse is upon
174. us, that something is never going to be the same again. I heard this after
175. the Enterprise was destroyed in "The Search for Spock." I've heard this
176. a lot over the years. It's generally over-reaction and worry before anyone
177. has even seen a frame of film.
178.

179. Bottom line being...wait and see, then judge. I've tried very hard
180. not to let you down, and I think so far I haven't done so...I have no
181. intention of starting now. Bruce is doing an absolutely *brilliant* job
182. as Captain Sheridan, bringing a thoughtfulness and intensity and
183. charm and intensity to the part that is a joy to behold. Give him a
184. chance.
185.

186.

187. Why replace Sinclair?
188.

189. Sheridan, or more specifically the need for someone *like* Sheridan
190. began to get through clearly toward the latter part of last season, as I
191. began planning out season two's progression, and kept looking at elements
192. of the story and trying to find ways to get Sinclair into the heart of
193. them. They felt contrived, for the most part; and the other characters,
194. like Londo and G'Kar and Delenn, were *really* moving forward in a big
195. way. The role of Sinclair was becoming primarily that of a "problem
196. solver," and when that happens, a sort of glass bell falls down around the
197. character, and you can't do much with him.
198.

199. So what the writer has to do is break that bell in one way or another;
200. do something totally unexpected to him, and bring in someone who has a
201. direct, personal connection with the storyline emerging in season two, so
202. it's not contrived or forced.
